A Guide To Hassle-Free Designer-Developer Collaboration

Photo of Szymon Adamiak
Szymon Adamiak, Co-Founder, Hype4 Mobile

Designers and developers share a common goal—to do what’s best for the user and for the business. But the day-to-day realities of their collaboration aren’t so clear-cut and idyllic.

Ask any designer or developer and they’ll tell you of bad experiences they had working with “the other side”. So let’s face it: when designers and developers work together, conflicts, friction and mutual struggles do occur. But why does this happen, and what can you do to mitigate them?

While there's no single solution, surprisingly simple things like improved processes, diligent practices and empathetic communication can go a long way in improving collaboration.

In this Master Class webinar, Szymon Adamiak of Hype4 shares his top tips for smooth designer-developer relationships, based on years of working as a front-end developer with teams of designers on various projects. You’ll learn:

  • How to communicate better—whether you’re a designer or a developer
  • The questions developers want to ask designers (but rarely do)
  • The questions designers want to ask developers (but rarely do)
  • Best practices for file handoff, naming conventions, exporting, responsive design, viewports and more
  • How to define and communicate priorities and ease of implementation
  • How and when to involve developers in the design process
  • What designers can provide to speed up development

Whether you're a designer or a developer, with these learnings, you can approach the dev-design hand-off with more confidence and positivity. Not only will applying these strategies help you and your colleagues face fewer problems in the collaboration process, but you’ll succeed in earning the admiration and respect of colleagues even in the other team.

How To Balance Remote and In-Person UX Work

Photo of Cory Lebson
Cory Lebson, Principal and Owner - Lebsontech LLC

UI/UX design is a field that adapts and translates well to remote work environments—especially compared to many other disciplines. That could be why interest in UX careers grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when localized or office-based jobs were at higher risk.

But can UX be done truly and fully remotely? When UI/UX teams were compelled to move all their processes online, there were drawbacks to remote UX that emerged as common pain points. In UX Research in particular, a complete absence of in-person research opportunities were difficult for teams to adjust to, and sometimes, it led to compromised research outcomes.

As the world returns to a new version of normal, across domains, remote work is slowly being replaced by hybrid work environments. And while this is a new shift for professionals in all domains, it represents a unique opportunity for designers. That’s because UI/UX design can benefit significantly from hybrid working formats—provided that designers know how to balance remote and in-person activities.

In this Master Class webinar, Cory Lebson will show you exactly how to strike this balance.

You’ll learn:

  • The current state of in-person vs remote UX work in the industry
  • How considerations change based on the nature and location of your role
  • How to approach remote UX research
  • How to approach remote UX design
  • How to prepare for the near future of UX work

Not only will this help you navigate the changing landscape of work more effortlessly, you’ll develop greater control and flexibility in your career; you’ll develop the confidence you need to carve out the appropriate working environment for your goals and aptitude.

Survival Metrics: Getting Change Done In An Agile and Data-Informed Way

Photo of Adam Thomas
Adam Thomas, Technologist, Speaker and Writer

When you’re working on a product, how do you decide when you should pivot?

Have you ever been in a situation where a launch has gone horribly and you have that sinking feeling that everyone knew it was going to go badly, but just didn’t know how to say it?

Being an agent of change in an organization, especially one where a product launch is underway, is hard. Often, the idea of understanding WHEN something fails and HOW to move forward when it does, escapes teams. There isn’t a shared language that helps them figure this out.

This leaves teams holding their ideas and opinions close to the chest. The fear: an unsure environment and unclear data will make their insights useless. The result: A forced normalcy, “business as usual,” where everyone smiles on Zoom even while they know that initiatives are headed to disaster.

Enter Survival Metrics, a framework that helps teams use what's important to the company (think - “values”) and operationalize them as metrics that make change much easier and more achievable.

In effect, Survival Metrics will give you a dashboard-like artifact that is understandable to various teams inside of your organization. This in turn gives you clearer action steps, makes values very clear, and produce incentives that will help you pivot in a fast, agile, and data informed way.

In this Master Class webinar by Adam Thomas, you’ll learn: How to identify Survival Metrics How to create a communication strategy that is clear to other disciplines How to operationalize that communication strategy with Survival Metrics How to iterate those metrics through your retrospectives

Through this webinar, you’ll learn to define Survival Metrics and use them in your agile environment. You’ll learn how to ask questions to understand the values of other disciplines, prioritize the information you’ve gained through those questions, and then iterate to keep metrics up to date.

Through this, you will empower your own opinions regardless of the organizational climate, and pave the way for your team to share countering perspectives in a data-empowered way.
