What are Local Groups?
Local Groups will expand your career network—whether you are interested in learning new skills, finding job opportunities or looking for a new employee.
A Local Group is a group of people who, like you, are passionate about design. Local Groups organize meetings to get inspired, have fun and learn from one another.

Meet-Up Details

Hi IxDF Johannesburg, let’s meet up and network over coffee! Share UX design insights and resources, discuss UX problems you are facing now, or just chat about anything else. It’s going to be an informal, cozy meet-up with fellow designers!

Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss Designing to influence held on Jun 9, 2023. Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

I am a professional speaker and executive management coach - focusing on making our world a better place through living your legacy! My question to those who might attend is “How do you design a legacy, using your personal influence?”

I look forward to meeting some of this ‘tribe’ - and explore how the Interaction Design Foundation process can actually be the model that one could use to achieve similar objectives?

Have yourselves a great day, and hope to see you on Friday!

Steve

Just a reminder about the Meet Up tomorrow Friday 9th June 2023 at the Croft & Co. coffee shop - 66 Tyrone Ave, Parkview, Johannesburg, 2193 - 10:00 to 12:30

Hi All!

The ‘program’ for Friday’s Meet-Up is a simple one – mainly to meet others and talk design – but for those who want structure – the design – we can follow this agenda:

1)     Meet, greet and introduce each other

2)     Introduce the theme – ‘Design for Influence’ – I will give a short 5 min background to that

3)     Share experiences of how we us design to influence (why and in what ways)

4)     I will summarize some key points from our discussions and explore further Meet Ups

A bit about me?

I am a 70 year old lifelong learner who is interested in the ‘human’ ‘being’ – that is why and how humans behave in different ways in different contexts – and what good things they do to make our world a better place. My background is as an ecologist with over 45 years in wildlife management BUT with my qualifications being in adult education – looking at why and how people protect wildlife and what needs to be done to ensure that our wonderful African wildlife populations remain viable into the future. During Covid I pivoted and became a qualified Executive Management Coach and Professional Speaker – aimed at influencing greater numbers of people to look after our world better – environmentally, socially and existentially. I have joined this ‘tribe’ to learn how to design my methodologies of influencing others to be more effective through better interaction with others.

Some thoughts from what I have learned so far from the course and its readings

“Good artists copy; great artists steal.”

(Good design) is “the result of a broader, more social interaction which means that a designer must have a toolbox full of concepts and methods drawn from the field of sociology. Simply put, sociology is the study of social human relationships—and such knowledge is thus necessary to us as designers.”

“Therefore, design knowledge based on sociology is a stable foundation to stand on, even when it seems like the world is moving at an ever-increasing pace. That platform of stable knowledge will be a key ingredient to the success of your personal career—as well as the success of the companies for whom you work.”

Learning from history – comparing previous to current situations: “Their technology may be vastly different, but their psychological apparatus are identical, and their needs to get things done in collaboration with their colleagues (sociologically) are also identical.”

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
