Chung, Kenneth and Hossain, Liaquat (2008): Network structure, position, ties and ICT use in distributed knowledge-intensive work. In: Proceedings of ACM CSCW08 Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work 2008. pp. 545-554.

In this study, we develop a theoretical model based on social network theories and the social influence model to understand how knowledge professionals utilise technology for work and communication. We investigate the association between egocentric network properties (structure, position and tie) and information and communication technology (ICT) use of individuals in knowledge-intensive and geographically dispersed settings. Analysis from data collected using a reliable and validated questionnaire show that task-level ICT use is significantly associated with degree centrality and functional tie-diversity; and communication-level ICT use is negatively associated with efficiency. Implications of these associations for knowledge-intensive work are discussed in conclusion.

Hossain, Liaquat and Zhou, David (2008): Measuring OSS quality trough centrality. In: Proceedings of the 2008 International Workshop on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering 2008. pp. 65-68.

In this study, we explore whether the degree of centrality, betweenness and density of the open source software or OSS team communications network have any bearing on the quality of the software developed. We measure the quality of OSS in terms of number of defect fixed per software promotion, the number of defects reported at different severity levels and the average number of days for a defect to be fixed for each project team. The data required to conduct the analysis needs to be of OSS projects, their team structure and also contribution of the projects user community and immediate development team. We extract the communications pattern of OSS projects development teams from online forums or message boards as the developers are usually located in different geographic areas. We use for collecting relevant coordination related data for this study; which is the central resource for hosting more than 100,000 open source development projects and with over 1 million registered users that participate in the development of high profile OSS projects. The outcome of this study suggests that there is a correlation between social network characteristics and strong and poor performing projects in an OSS environment.

We suggest that changes in the interactions patterns of communications networks have implications for exploring the phases of organisational disintegration. We develop a set of criteria for measuring the phases of organisational disintegration and apply that to Enron e-mail communications data for testing our preliminary assumptions. We explore the roles of cohesive subgroups (or cliques) and the changes in the composition of clique structure during organisational disintegration. Our preliminary assumptions that drive the work are as follows: (i) the number of cliques increase during organisational disintegration; (ii) structural changes occur in the composition of clique structure and its membership (i.e., we see more contributing actors for the disintegration state clique structure than during the normal state of an organisation).

Hossain, Liaquat, Wu, Andre and Chung, Kenneth K. S. (2006): Actor centrality correlates to project based coordination. In: Proceedings of ACM CSCW06 Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work 2006. pp. 363-372.

In this study, we draw on network centrality concepts and coordination theory to understand how project team members interact when working towards a common goal. A text-mining application based on the constructs of coordination theory was developed to measure the coordinative activity of each employee. Results show that high network centrality is correlated with the ability of an actor to coordinate actions of others in a project group. Furthermore, highly centralised actors coordinate better than others. In conclusion, we suggest implications of appropriate network structure for supporting organisational coordination more effectively and efficiently.
