Have you ever been a part of a participatory design process or used of a participatory method only to find that it fell short of any real shift in power dynamics? Have you ever compared notes with another participatory designer only to find out their definition of participatory design is different than your own? Have you faced opposition from your organization in practicing design in a more participatory way?

Join us, add to the conversation, and see what Victor Udoewa, NASA’s Service Design Lead, has to say about such experiences, the different definitions of participatory design and how participatory design can actually be used to reinforce hierarchies. One way he has found to dismantle that system is to practice Radical Participatory Design (RPD).

You’ll learn:

  • What participatory design is.
  • How definitions of participatory design vary.
  • What RPD is and how to start practicing it.
  • How to assert your power as a designer.

This Master Class is for anyone involved or interested in participatory design and how to make the process more effective and efficient.

Even if you can’t attend the webinar live, register to get access to a recording that you can watch anytime afterwards.

Victor Udoewa, Service Design Lead, NASA SBIR/STTR Program

Victor Udoewa is Chief Technology Officer, Chief Experience Officer, and Service Design Lead in the NASA Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Research (SBIR/STTR) Program. Before NASA, he was Director of Strategy at 18F, a civic consultancy for and inside the federal government. He started the education business unit, developed a line of educational products and services, directed strategy, managed the digital strategists’ practice, and served as a designer and strategist on partner projects.

Previously, as a Global Education Instructional Designer and Training Development Specialist at Google, he designed learning experiences for people in low-to-middle-income countries around the world. The education could range from experiences covering how to develop web applications and how to use the internet to improve teaching and learning, to experiences exploring how to use internet technologies in post-disaster emergency response situations as well as global digital literacy. As a part of that work, he also advised Google in global energy and access work. Prior to Google he served at USAID and DHS as a science & technology policy advisor and development engineer focusing on infrastructure, post-disaster reconstruction, climate neutrality and global health.

Building on his time teaching in secondary schools, he still teaches teachers as an educational specialist and adjunct professor of education focusing on science and math education through classes, workshops, and video series. He still conducts medical, engineering, or education research and is a certified health crisis and trauma counselor focusing (HIV/AIDS, miscarriage, etc.). Pre-COVID, he enjoyed singing in his male a cappella group and teaching salsa classes on the weekend. He still enjoys time with his wonderful family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why aren’t the Master Class webinars free of cost for members?

While the Master Class webinars aren’t free, they are open to both members and non-members of Interaction Design Foundation. While non-members pay $50 per webinar, members pay only $5. We charge this nominal fee to cover a few costs associated with producing the webinars, including:

  • The cost of using Zoom as our webinar partner. Zoom is one of the most reliable webinar hosting platforms, but it’s also one of the most expensive. We chose quality over affordability to bring you a better viewing experience, and the nominal fee we charge helps us cover these costs, without making the webinars expensive.

  • Along with the cost of Zoom, we also cover webinar costs associated with servers, payment gateways and code maintenance. In fact, 40 cents off every dollar in a transaction goes towards just the payment gateway alone!

Charging this small fee goes a long way in helping us cover these costs and enables us to continue to bring you high-quality content with the best experts.

Will the Master Class webinar be recorded?
Absolutely! Every Master Class webinar is recorded by default, and if you register, you will automatically receive the link to the recording a few hours after the broadcast ends.
What happens if I can't attend a Master Class webinar live?
No problem at all—as long as you make sure to register for it, you’ll receive a recording link a few hours after the broadcast ends. This way, you can catch up on everything that happens in the live session. But, do be sure to register, as the recording is only sent to registered attendees!

I missed registering for some of the Master Class webinars hosted in previous months. How can I get access to them now?

I’m a member, but I cannot see all the Master Classes I purchased on my profile. How can I find the ones that are missing?
Many of the past Master Classes have been edited and uploaded to our platform so that our members can view them conveniently in one place.

After each Master Class broadcast, our video editors painstakingly edit, improve and enhance the quality of these recordings to give you a better experience—but this process takes time, and that’s why there’s sometimes a delay in making them available within your profile.

Until recent Master Class recordings appear in your profile, you can always playback any of the Master Classes you’ve purchased using the Zoom recording links you received after the broadcast. Can’t find these recording links? Then please email mads.soegaard@interaction-design.org for assistance.
