Meet-Up Details

Hi IxDF Melbourne, let’s meet up and network over coffee!

I’ve been a member of the IxDF for 12 months and still haven’t met any other members or like minded people outside of my work colleagues. Let’s get together to share UX design insights and resources, discuss UX problems you are facing now, or just chat about anything else. It’s going to be an informal, cozy meet-up with fellow designers!

Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss Let's start 2023 with a coffee! held on Jan 4, 2023. Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

It's only a small venue (probably should have scoped it out first) so there's not a lot of seating. But the coffees great which is the main thing.

Hey Jeff! Great initiative getting something going! Don’t think I would be able to make this one but hopefully some other Melbournians can attend; I see you’re with WorkSafe - I often enjoy learning about how good UX design can influence things like safety & culture in a workplace 😊 has there been anything you’ve come across through IxDF that you’ve been able to carry over into your work?

Hi Emily. I’m sure there will be lots more opportunities to meet other like minded designers coming up. I’m planning on arranging more catch ups so keep visiting the IxDF Melbourne events page - I’ll make sure that I give everyone plenty of notice.

To answer your question - Yes. Definitely. I’ve taken a number of things learn from my interactions with IxDF (and not jsut from the courses) that I’ve incorporating into my design toolkit and I’m currently using to enhance the UX of the products I’m working on.

It’s my opinion only - but I feel that UX is regularly overlooked when people are designing for Health and Safety products because the focus is on outcomes and results and not the usability. It’s something that I am hoping will change very soon.

Great initiative! Unfortunately will be overseas in early Jan, but hopefully, I can join the next one!

Great to hear, Jeff! I work in a customer support role at the moment for a software company - our platform is predominantly used for safety and training, and I definitely agree with you that UX is often something that is overlooked! I’m lucky that our team are very passionate about the end user and setting them up to win, but often there are a lot of other people/processes in the communication chains who, like you said, only focus on outcomes and ticking boxes.

Either that or the training and safety materials provided are dense, text-heavy and use unrelatable language for the cohort/users! I take a lot of calls from end users who are confused because their parent company has either not given them ANY instruction, or has given them instructions they cannot engage with - particularly when it comes to a lot of manual labour & skilled trade jobs where reading manuals is not something a lot of people have time for (or the level of comprehension/education required to interpret wordy procedural documents!)

It’s really quite sad sometimes to see when people are just encouraged to tick a box so that the numbers look good, even though they don’t know what they’re ticking off.

Glad you’re involved in this space!

Hi Emily.

We use your companies platform but not as well as we should and it's one of the things I'm planning on fixing. It's really easy to find safety based information, but it's not always relevant to the users industry, and its not always compliant with the legislation in the user's country or region.

Having the right platform is a good start, but the real job is keeping the information current and relevant, and of course user centric. Having a network of like minded people around to bounce ideas off and compare notes with is why I'm here.

Hopefully you can make it to another event. I'm looking forward to having a chat with you.

Sounds like a plan! I’m in!

Hi Allwyn

Did you make it to Dukes today? I had a lovely chat with one other IxDF member but I'm not sure if anyone else turned up.

I'm sorry if we missed you.

hai Guys I’m new to meetup at IxDF, How would I look for you guys at the place any contact details? Or will it be obvious at the Cafe?

Hi Bharat

Did you make it to Dukes today? I'm sorry if we missed you.

Hi. I'm only new too. I'm sitting on a stool just to the left as you come in the door. I'm wearing a paisley shirt. You won't miss me.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for organizing this event. I would love to have more regular UX meetups, but I’m running low on time organizing them. Yet I do have a large startup community and the infrastructure to support event hosts. Would you be interested in chatting to explore if we can help each other make a difference?

Cheers,

David

Hey guys. Great initiative! I just found out about it and unfortunately missed it but would love to join a future meeting.

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
