Meet-Up Details

Hi IxDF Bhubaneswar, let's meet online and discuss Visualisation! Often charts are misinterpreted by people, but mostly it happens due to bad design. Let's pick up some interesting examples of charts and discuss visualisation design.

We’ve all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what if we don’t understand what we’re looking at? Social media has made charts, infographics, and diagrams ubiquitous—and easier to share than ever. We associate charts with science and reason; the flashy visuals are both appealing and persuasive. Pie charts, maps, bar and line graphs, and scatter plots (to name a few) can better inform us, revealing patterns and trends hidden behind the numbers we encounter in our lives. In short, good charts make us smarter—if we know how to read them.

Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! I am a visualisation design researcher. I am always fascinated by charts and other visualisations that pop-up around us. Now a days we see, news papers, news channels and all form of media using more and more charts, graphs and visualisations in their feed. But I feel sometimes it may get overwhelming for the general public. Through this meet-up I plan to discuss the book "How Charts Lie: Getting Smarter about Visual Information by Alberto Cairo". Following which we will take up some example visualisations that appeared in the Indian media and discuss them.

We will have the meetup online using Zoom. The joining details will be communicated a day before the meetup.

Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

Please get the ticket from eventbrite using the link below. We will share the Zoom details through eventbrite. Thanks.

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
