What are Local Groups?
Local Groups will expand your career network—whether you are interested in learning new skills, finding job opportunities or looking for a new employee.
A Local Group is a group of people who, like you, are passionate about design. Local Groups organize meetings to get inspired, have fun and learn from one another.

Meet-Up Details

We will be creating ideas for things that could be re-invented to fit specific scenarios in the future. Nothing serious, all fun!

But, before I share more please read the following carefully. These types of events are hard to plan based on the need for participation.

***Please only sign up if committed to showing up and participating. These will NOT be the passive type of events. The design lab events will offer unique opportunities to explore. If any of this does not sound like it is for you, all good, join us for another type of event in the future.

Now back to the description.

Things from the future is a future design or speculative design prototyping exercise for reimagining things we are already familiar with.

Each round of the game involves teams choosing the conditions and the thing to be reimagined and then creating paper prototypes/descriptions of the thing in the future. Finally, sharing and ranking of the ideas.

The game was originally developed for facilitation with the BBC and has been refined to be used by anyone. I would say it could be used for everything from fun with your team to understanding a long-term roadmap or providing a vision for a new product.

Thing from the Future was one of many techniques they used during the experience.

Looking forward to collaborating with you!

Meet-Up Discussion

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss Design Lab (read description before sign up): Thing from the future held on Feb 23, 2023. Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

This sounds really fun. Do you have any links you could share re. the process? (eg. outcomes from some of the original BBC efforts would be interesting to review)

Howdy Mo,
I did a little digging and here is the blog post by the creator of the whole multi-technique experience that was designed for the BBC. Thing from the Future was one of many techniques they used during the experience.

The game itself can be found here with instructions:

I hope you can join us!

Sound like a great idea and exercise. Do we plan to collaborate via Figjam/Miro or other platforms?

Good question Ben, you will have to wait to find out!

No prior preparation will be needed, I am still working on designing the experience as I have been busy with other things.

Looking forward to meeting you!

This looks really good - looking forward to it. Should we come with ideas of things we want to work on, or will those details be guided?

Hey Jamie,
For the sake of this workshop I am going to pre-select. But, I will be sure to provide the resources and modifications to the method so you could design for things you would like to explore.

Although, if there is enough interest your idea would make for an interest new event!

Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Try to be on time so we can get started by 5 minutes past 7 pm.

Meet-up attendees

Members can show their interest to attend a meet-up by clicking “Attend this meet-up” button. In addition, since Local Groups events are open to all, non-members can also attend these meet-ups.

Members might be bringing their non-member friends to a Local Group meet-up (and you’re welcome to do the same), but their non-member friends will not be shown as “attending” because this feature is only available to members.

P.S.: Note that the number of attendees is not an indication of its value! Small meet-ups work perfectly, and can facilitate deeper, more fruitful conversations.
