... there are no simple 'right' answers for most web design questions (at least not for the important ones). What works is good, integrated design that fills a need--carefully thought out, well executed, and tested.

Baumann, Ryan and Seales, W. Brent (2009): Robust registration of manuscript images. In: JCDL09 Proceedings of the 2009 Joint International Conference on Digital Libraries 2009. pp. 263-266.

In this paper we present an application of image registration techniques to the specific domain of manuscript images. We show the application of this technique to images of the Venetus A, a 10th century manuscript of Homer's Iliad. The same algorithm is used to register images of the MS across time (including photographs separated by over a century), as well as across imaging modalities.

The problem of annotating unstructured images is labor intensive and difficult to automate. Linking is a type of annotation where an image region is tagged by representing a correspondence between the region and other information. Any serious effort at creating a digital edition of a manuscript from nothing but images and their associated information, such as transcripts and editorial remarks, must include the task of creating a large number of links between image regions and the related information. We present an approach to the problem of image linking, which concentrates on the fundamental and labor-intensive task of associating image regions with their textual counterparts. We assume the input to the system is a set of images representing a manuscript, and that associated data, such as a transcript, is available to provide guidance to the automated portion of the system. Our approach targets collections that are damaged and difficult-to-read, such as manuscripts that require intensive editorial annotation. It is essentially impossible to perform fully automated techniques, such as optical character recognition (OCR) or accurate handwriting analysis [2], on these kinds of manuscripts.

Recent research on annotations has focused on how readers annotate texts, ignoring the question of how reading annotations might affect subsequent readers of a text. This paper reports on a study of persuasive essays written by 123 undergraduates receiving primary source materials annotated in various ways. Findings indicate that annotations improve recall of emphasized items, influence how specific arguments in the source materials are perceived, decrease students' tendencies to unnecessarily summarize. Of particular interest is that students' perceptions of the annotator appeared to greatly influence how they responded to the annotated material. Using this study as a basis, I discuss implications for the design and implementation of digitally annotated materials.
