Stegemann, Timo, Ziegler, Jürgen, Hussein, Tim and Gaulke, Werner (2012): Interactive construction of semantic widgets for visualizing semantic web data. In: ACM SIGCHI 2012 Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems 2012. pp. 157-162.

The rapidly growing amount of semantically represented data on the Web creates the need for more intuitive methods and tools to interact with these data and to use them in standard Web applications. We present a method how users can interactively define personalized views of large semantic data spaces. Specifically, we propose X3S as a technique and format for specifying 'semantic widgets' that integrate querying and filtering of semantic data with defining their layout and presentation style. In addition, an editor has been developed that allows to create X3S templates in a direct manipulation style. The editor and the underlying format are evaluated against existing approaches by comparing their functional capabilities as well as in an initial user study.

While the Semantic Web and its underlying technologies since their inception have been mainly focused on processing Web information by machines, it is increasingly recognized that users could also benefit more directly from semantic techniques. Users must be provided with suitable means to interact with the immensely growing Web of Data, to satisfy their information needs in a more targeted and efficient manner, to explore unknown concepts or relationships, and to obtain personalized and context-adaptive access to relevant resources and services. In this talk, we will address visual search and exploration of semantic data, discuss the role of ontologies in modeling users and context, and highlight some research directions that might make semantic data and techniques more beneficial for human users.

Context plays an increasingly important role to adapt systems to users' needs and to make access to large information spaces more efficient. Yet, in the area of collaborative work the potential of context-based adaptation of IT systems has so far not been investigated and exploited. There is a lack of methods that take into account the manifold aspects of context such as physical, activity-based, thematic or social context in an integrated fashion. This workshop will discuss models, methods and system design approaches for context-adaptive collaboration support and will outline research directions leading towards comprehensive understanding of context.

Being aware of the relationships that exist between objects of interest is crucial in many situations. The RelFinder user interface helps to get an overview: Even large amounts of relationships can be visualized, filtered, and analyzed by the user. Common concepts of knowledge representation are exploited in order to support interactive exploration both on the level of global filters and single relationships. The RelFinder is easy-to-use and works on every RDF knowledge base that provides standardized SPARQL access.

This article is an extended version of a keynote address presented at the 9th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction held in New Orleans, August 5 through 10, 2001. The article presents an overview of issues pertaining to the development of a user-friendly information society, and introduces 3 concepts for improving the intuitiveness of human-technology interaction in the future. Dynamic visualizations, multimodal interaction, and cooperative exploration are considered as 3 major approaches to improving human-technology interaction. These concepts and interaction techniques based on them are currently being investigated in a large joint research effort, the project INVITE (Intuitive Human-Technology Interaction in the Information Society). An overview of INVITE's objectives and achievements is given. Selected application areas are presented in which the concepts and techniques are applied. Finally, the issue of the relation between the physical work environment and creative activities is addressed. A spatial environment with various technical devices is described that offers a range of techniques for stimulating creativity and intuition.

Ziegler, Jürgen (2002): Modeling Cooperative Work Processes-A Multiple Perspectives Framework. In International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 14 (2) pp. 139-157.

This article presents a framework, concepts, and notations for modeling cooperative work from different perspectives. The framework is based on the basic notions information, task, and actor, which are modeled individually and in relation to each other. The Cooperation Modeling Technique (CMT) built on these concepts provides notations for representing the different aspects of cooperative work. This results in a flexible approach for representing different analysis perspectives pertaining to the design of cooperation support systems. The method aims at providing abstractions and mechanisms that are targeted not only at structured aspects of work processes but particularly at unstructured and less formalizable cooperation issues. The main focus of the approach is currently on asynchronous forms of cooperation, addressing informational awareness for asynchronous processes. The framework, however, also encompasses synchronous types of cooperation. The development of concrete methods for these aspects is a focus of future work.

Modern work systems are characterized by a high amount of cooperation among working persons. Thus, task modelling for cooperative work is of great significance for an appropriate design of work systems. Due to the special characteristics of cooperative work, several requirements for the modelling technique have to be met. In this paper, first the requirements for a task modelling technique are derived and compared with existing approaches. Then, as no existing technique completely fulfils the important requirement for abstraction in order to model weakly structured activities, a new technique is presented, which is on the one hand essentially based on an existing modelling language for deterministic software intensive systems and on the other hand has been enlarged by additional concepts for being able to model tasks carried out cooperatively by human beings. The results of a case study in which the new technique has been applied are presented and discussed. Finally, an outlook towards future research concerning task modelling for cooperative work is given.

Improvements of working conditions both for the software engineer and the user require more suitable methods and tools. Currently, most software engineers and programmers still use methods and tools developed in the 70's and earlier. What they need are practical methods and tools which reduce life cycle costs and gain productivity at the same time. Moreover, there is an increasing demand for systems, which consider the user's needs and are better suited for their tasks. The most important approaches of today are: user participation and prototyping, automated support of style guides, task analysis and modeling, CASE tools, UIMS and collaborative work, and object-oriented design. TASK, a method currently under development will be introduced.

The project 'Human Factors in Information Technology' (HUFIT) is an extensive project of cooperation in the European ESPRIT programme, involving eleven companies and research institutes in eight European countries. The project has two major objectives: it aims at improving the design process of IT products by increasing the awareness of Human Factors issues and by providing methods and tools for a user-oriented design. The second major objective is to further develop user interface techniques, especially for multimedia and multimodal interfaces and to provide tools for prototyping, and implementation of these interfaces. This paper presents the areas of research in HUFIT. The focus is on the presentation of the major outcomes of the project: the HUFIT Toolset and the software tools INTUIT, DIAMANT, and MAITRE.

Some more recent developments of workstations have been using a new mode of man-computer interaction. As a term for this mode "Direct Manipulation" has been introduced in the literature. A characterization of direct manipulation is given on the basis of a suggested general man-computer interface model. The concept of "generic interaction modes" is introduced and discussed, where programming languages, direct manipulation and natural language are suggested to form generic interaction modes. Some work on the evaluation of an interface based on direct manipulation (Xerox STAR) is reported.
