Lepouras, Giorgos and Weir, George R. S. (2003): Subtitled interaction: complementary support as an alternative to localization. In International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 59 (6) pp. 941-957

Many computer users face problems in their interaction as a result of the native language employed by the application. The language of the application is often at variance with the native language of its users. This issue is frequently addressed through localization. In turn, localization generates a range of new problems. We propose an alternative to localization that is analogous to cinematic subtitles. This has the potential to reduce the user interaction defects that otherwise arise with localization whilst benefiting users through an additional channel of information in their own language. This paper outlines a prototype implementation and describes our initial evaluation of this approach. We suggest that our complementary `subtitles' promise consistent support for all applications in the user's computing environment and yield a system that is expandable and much easier to maintain than pre-localized software.

Lepouras, Giorgos and Weir, George R. S. (1999): It's not Greek to Me: Terminology and the Second Language. In ACM SIGCHI Bulletin, 31 (2) pp. 17-24

The localisation of software applications is a common way of avoiding 'second-language' difficulties but can lead to new problems in user interaction. One determinant of this condition is the selection of appropriate terminology for local language use. The present paper reports on a comparison of terminology from three leading word processor packages, in their English and Greek language varieties. Diversity in terminology, the resort to transliteration, and scope for neologism are characteristic results of localisation that underline the risks of confusion in the target user population. This paper discusses the possibility of preventative measures and offers a remedial approach to this problem for use in the considered applications.

Weir, George R. S., Lepouras, Giorgos and Sakellaridis, Ulysses (1996): Second-Language Help for Windows Applications. In: Sasse, Martina Angela, Cunningham, R. J. and Winder, R. L. (eds.) Proceedings of the Eleventh Conference of the British Computer Society Human Computer Interaction Specialist Group - People and Computers XI August, 1996, London, UK. pp. 129-138.

This paper describes an approach to the second-language problem for user-support in the context of existing MS-Windows applications. We outline a methodology for deriving foci for support, and present guidelines for the addition of second-language enhancements. Finally, we detail our procedure for implementing such help facilities with examples of enhanced Chinese and Greek second-language support.
