Antonio Piccinno is currently assistant professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari. He received a Laurea Degree with full marks and honors in Computer Science from the University of Bari in July 2001, discussing a thesis on "web site personalization", under the supervision of Prof. Maria Francesca Costabile. In 2001 he worked as research collaborator of the Department of Computer Science working on the FAIRWIS IST-1999-12641 project, funded by the European Community. From November 2001 to October 2004 he was PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Bari. In March 2005 he got the PhD, discussing a thesis titled "Software environments for supporting End-User Development". From April 2005 to April 2009, he has been research collaborator at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari. His research interests focus on End-User Development, Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Interactive Systems, Theory of Visual Languages, Component-Based Software Development, WWW Interfaces, Multimodal and Multimedia Interaction, Adaptive Interfaces. He has collaborated to the network of excellence on End-User Development “EUD-Net IST-2001-37470”, funded by the European Community, of which the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bari has been managing node. He also collaborated to other projects: IST-1999-12641 "FAIRWIS - Trade Fair Web-based Information Services" (during 2000-2001) and IST-2001-34290 "FairsNet - On-line Solutions for Trade Fairs" (during 2002-2003), funded by the European Community; DE_VISU project (during 2001-2002), funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

Barricelli, Barbara R., Mussio, Piero, Valtolina, Stefano, Padula, Marco, Scala, Paolo L. and Piccinno, Antonio (2010): Visual workflow composition through semantic orchestration of web services. In: Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces 2010. p. 405.

There is an increasing request by organizations to allow people outside the IT department to create, shape and adapt the software artifacts they use as they do with real ones in their work practice. Moreover, organizations have recently become aware that they are part of a complex network of connections with partners, customers, and suppliers. This new consciousness has led them to the need for new ways to share their knowledge outside the organization borders. This paper capitalizes on the experience gained in the collaboration with a certification institution to propose a novel network of software environments, i.e., the Task Management System (TMS) network, and a web-service based architecture to support end users to exploit their knowledge and expertise in their daily work activities. In particular, the network allows the end users of an organization to design, execute, and check the execution of a workflow. The goal is not to automate the skills of the end users, but to assist them in their activity, permitting them to use the knowledge and expertise they possess. A prototype for the proposed architecture is currently under development, starting from the software environment dedicated to the design of workflows.

In the Information Society, end-users keep increasing very fast in number, as well as in their demand with respect to the activities they would like to perform with computer environments, without being obliged to become computer specialists. There is a great request to provide end-users with powerful and flexible environments, tailorable to the culture, skills and needs of a very diverse end-user population. In this paper, we discuss a framework for End-User Development (EUD) and present our methodology for designing software environments that support the activities of a particular class of end-users, called domain-expert users, with the objective of making their work with the computer easier. Such environments are called Software Shaping Workshops, in analogy to artisan workshops: they provide users only with the necessary tools that allow them to accomplish their specific activities by properly shaping software artefacts without being lost in virtual space.

The methodology is discussed, outlining its implementation through a web-based prototype.
