Associate professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Escuela Politécnica Superior), Spain. He holds a degree in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University "La Sapienza" of Rome, Italy (Thesis title: a Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments). From 1999 to 2002 he worked for the Rome IBM Tivoli Laboratory, Silicon Graphics and the Reply group. During the Summer 2003, he has spent three months for an internship at the XEROX PARC (Palo Alto Research Center, Palo Alto, CA, USA) in the ISTL (Information Science and Technology) Lab working in Human Document Interaction and after he has hold a Visiting Researcher contract within the same group. Until February 2007, he was a Research Fellow at the Computer Science Department of the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy. In the past his research activities focused on theory and algorithms for pattern recognition, machine learning and visualization. Today he is working on Human Computer Interaction, Pervasive Computing and Social Networking.

Onorati, Teresa, Malizia, Alessio, Olsen, Kai A., Diaz, Paloma and Aedo, Ignacio (2012): I feel lucky: an automated personal assistant for smartphones. In: Proceedings of the 2012 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces 2012. pp. 328-331.

Third generation devices, such as smartphones, have the possibility of knowing the position of the user. By combining time, position and data in the Cloud it is possible to make smart deductions as to what information the user needs. These deductions can be performed by an automated assistant that have access to the user's e-mail and SMS messages, calendar, phone book, notes, etc., as well as to the position of the user. The assistant can present the information in an "I feel lucky" display on the user's smartphone. These concepts have been evaluated in a case study with a group of students, simulating the output of such an interface.

Wittenburg, Kent, Malizia, Alessio, Lupo, Luca and Pekhteryev, Georgiy (2012): Visualizing set-valued attributes in parallel with equal-height histograms. In: Proceedings of the 2012 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces 2012. pp. 632-635.

Visualization of set-valued attributes in multi-dimensional information visualization systems remains a relatively unexplored problem. Here we introduce a novel method for visualizing set-valued attributes that we call the singleton set distribution view and integrate it into an interactive multi-dimensional attribute visualization tool utilizing parallel bargrams (aka equal-height histograms) as its main visual motif. We discuss our design rationale and report on the results of an evaluation study.

Lupo, Luca, Malizia, Alessio, Diaz, Paloma and Aedo, Ignacio (2012): SocialStory: a social storyboard system for sharing experiences in emergencies. In: Proceedings of the 2012 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces 2012. pp. 786-787.

During and after crisis situations people are interested in getting knowledge about what happened and in obtaining information regarding damages, victims, and possible repercussions. Social network systems represent powerful sources due to their rapid growth in the last few years and the amount of continuous updated information published by people. Studies confirmed that people are interested in reporting facts during hazards, however due to the wide distribution of information and the lack of mechanisms to re-use it, it is an awkward task to be accomplished. For the above reasons in this paper we present SocialStory, a social platform for helping people to retrieve and filter materials available on the Internet and to compose and share personal experiences about crisis situations.

Bellucci, Andrea, Malizia, Alessio, Diaz, Paloma and Aedo, Ignacio (2010): Don't touch me: multi-user annotations on a map in large display environments. In: Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces 2010. pp. 391-392.

Touchless interaction techniques do not require physical contact while interacting with a system so to allow natural interaction with digital information, made tangible in the physical world through pervasive screen displays. In this project we explore the use of Nintendo Wii Remote controller as a touchless interface for interacting with map based applications in large displays environments. A prototype (Don't Touch Me) was developed that allows users to collaborative place multimodal annotations on a map: pictorials, auditives and haptics.

Klann, Markus, Malizia, Alessio, Chittaro, Luca, Cuevas, Ignacio Aedo and Levialdi, Stefano (2008): HCI for emergencies. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 5-10, 2008. pp. 3945-3948.

Emergencies put people in a particular state of mind and often also in difficult physical situations. When designing information technology for emergencies, these two sides have to be taken into account in the various activities supporting design. This includes studying and understanding the users and the influential factors for good designs, engaging the users in the design process as well as evaluating designs in realistic ways. There are challenges specific to emergencies in all of these activities, as well as in new technologies ranging from wearable computing to distributed information systems. This workshop is meant as an opportunity for interdisciplinary discussion as well as practical hands-on exchange of experiences regarding these challenges. The goal is to work towards a better understanding of the challenges, technologies, practices, and design methodologies relevant to HCI in emergencies.
