Journal of Integrated Design & Process Science

IOS Press
4 issues per year

Aims and Scope: The notions of design and process cut across many disciplines. Applications of abstract notions of design and process to engineering problem solving would certainly redefine and expand the notion of engineering itself in the 21st century. This Journal of SDPS strives to be the repository of human knowledge covering interdisciplinary notions of design and process in a rigorous fashion. We expect and encourage papers crossing the boundaries back and forth in mathematical landscape as well as among mathematics, physics, economics, management science, and engineering. Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science is an archival, peer-reviewed technical journal publishing the following types of papers: a) Research papers, b) Reports on case studies, c) Reports on major design and process projects, d) Design and process standards and proposals, and e) Insightful tutorials on design and process. It has been observed that most of the work related to design and process is interdisciplinary and until recently has been scattered in journals of many diverse disciplines. The objective of this journal is to publish state-of-the-art papers in this expanding field, providing an international and interdisciplinary forum for best work in design and process related areas. The audience of this journal will have a single source to keep informed on new and quality work as academic research papers and synthesis on best-practices. Consistent with SDPS philosophy, the journal strives to maintain an international and interdisciplinary balance by relying on experts from various corners of the world. Authors whose work is in the domain of Interdisciplinary no-mans land with a flavor of design and process are encouraged to submit their papers to this Journal.

Levin, Mark Sh. and Sharov, Stanislav Yu. (2009): Hierarchical morphological design of Web-hosting system. In Journal of Integrated Design & Process Science, 13 (1) pp. 1-14. Available online

In the paper, hierarchical combinatorial synthesis of Web-hosting system is described. The composition problem is examined as analysis and selection of system component alternatives (e.g., hardware alternatives, software alternatives, communication alternatives). The modular design process is based on Hierarchical Morphological Multicriteria Design (HMMD) approach: (i) design of a tree-like model for the system, (ii) generation of design alternatives for each leaf node of the system model, (iii) generation of criteria and their scales for each node of the system model, (iv) assessment of the design alternatives upon the corresponding criteria, (v) multicriteria analysis of the alternatives for system components/parts to get ordinal estimates of quality for each design alternative, (vi) composing the selected alternatives into a resultant combination or a composite design alternative for the higher hierarchical level of the system model (while taking into account ordinal quality of the alternatives above and ordinal quality of compatibility between the alternatives). The multicriteria analysis of the design alternatives and their composition is based on a hierarchical Bottom-Up framework. A two-criteria combinatorial problem (morphological clique problem) is used for the composition and Pareto-effective solutions are searched for. An example of Web-hosting system consists of the following basic system parts: (a) facilities (servers, telecommunication facilities), (b) Internet access, (c) software part (Web server, Web technology). The set of basic criteria involves the following: price, reliability, scalability, stability of work, maintenance cost, etc. Numerical examples illustrate the system modeling and design processes.
