Pargman, Teresa Cerratto and Waern, Yvonne (2003): Appropriating the use of a Moo for collaborative learning. In Interacting with Computers, 15 (6) pp. 759-781

The study presents an analysis of the activities of professional teachers while they use a text-based computer-mediated communication system called a Moo. The teachers, who are geographically distributed, attend a professional training course in education and information technology. The focus is on the appropriation process with regard to using the artifact within their learning and teaching activity. In order to analyze this process, participants' text-based communication was logged and the data was treated both quantitatively and qualitatively. We found that interaction through the artifact brings a modification in the organization of the classroom discourse and in particular in the teachers' communication schemes. We observed that the teachers-as-students attending the online training used the artifact mainly for the establishment and maintenance of relationships. They appropriated the features of the artifact that allowed them to 'talk' and exchange personal experiences rather easily. They did not however, elaborate online information shared with the others.

Waern, Yvonne and Waern, Karl-Gustaf (1993): Computer Assistance in Design Engineering. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 12 (3) pp. 165-173

The design engineering process is analysed from a cognitive ergonomics point of view, relating it to models of problem-solving and cognitive skills. Observations from several Swedish studies are discussed in this framework. Results indicate that CAD systems require some re-thinking; in particular concepts related to the computer storage have to be incorporated in the problem space of design. As to heuristics, CAD systems seem to offer a wide variety of working. Cognitive skills related to CAD seem to be easily acquired, although the transition between different CAD systems will cause some initial problems. In general it is found that current CAD systems mainly support the detail design phase. Some ideas for future systems which would support the conceptual design phase in addition are discussed.

Waern, Yvonne, Hagglund, Sture, Lowgren, Jonas, Rankin, Ivan, Sokolnicki, Tomas and Steinemann, Anne (1992): Communication Knowledge for Knowledge Communication. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 37 (2) pp. 215-239

Knowledge systems can be regarded as agents communicating between domain experts and end users. We emphasize the concept of "communication knowledge", distinct from the domain knowledge. Three aspects of communication knowledge are identified and research related to them presented. These are domain-related knowledge, discourse knowledge and mediating knowledge. This frame of reference is applied in the contexts of knowledge acquisition, user interface management in knowledge systems, text generation in expert critiquing systems and tutoring systems. We discuss the implications of the proposed framework in terms of implemented systems and finally suggest a future research agenda emanating from the analyses.

Waern, Yvonne, Malmsten, Nils, Oestreicher, Lars, Hjalmarsson, Ann and Gidlöf-Gunnarsson, Anita (1991): Office Automation and Users' Need for Support. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 10 (6) pp. 501-514

We investigated a recently introduced office automation system at Swedish Telecom. In a first study, where 275 users answered an inventory, the users indicated that they found the system useful, but that they would like better user support. Paper and on-line support were most often used at the syntax level, but were not regarded to be very satisfactory. Human advisors were found to be consulted most often, as well as being reported the most satisfactory means of support at the task and conceptual levels. In an interview study concerning the electronic mail system, the results from 35 users showed that the users were satisfied with the system, but that they knew fairly little about it, particularly at the semantic level. A third study showed that the system support personnel knew their users rather well. When asked to describe the system, system support personnel mainly described the system in computer terms, whereas many other users described it non-informatively. It is concluded that knowledgeable human advisors are needed to support the efficient use of a system by illuminating task and semantic aspects. At the same time, easy-to-use manuals are needed to support the reminding about syntactic and interaction details.

Hjalmarsson, Ann, Oestreicher, Lars and Waern, Yvonne (1989): Human Factors in Electronic Mail System Design. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 8 (6) pp. 461-474

The current paper analyses how human factors aspects and system design aspects may co-operate in the design of a particular application, i.e. electronic mail systems. A review of research on the experience of electronic mail systems is presented, as well as a pilot study covering the experience of mail systems in different user groups. The users were found to differ mainly in terms of the tasks they performed and wanted to perform. It is therefore suggested that a task analysis is essential in system design. Current practice on task analysis is presented, which shows that a more detailed task analysis is needed to be useful. In order to achieve flexibility, the subtasks found should be designed in a modular way. Here the system designer will need different supports. To facilitate co-operation between end-users and system designers some kind of communication support is also suggested.

Waern, Yvonne (1987): Does Computer Interest Induce Mechanical Thinking?. In: Bullinger, Hans-Jorg and Shackel, Brian (eds.) INTERACT 87 - 2nd IFIP International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction September 1-4, 1987, Stuttgart, Germany. pp. 43-47.

Many people are concerned about the effects of the computerization. Here one of the worries will be attended to dealing with the effect of computers on people who work with computers: are the computer experts getting like machines by their intercourse with computers? Two studies are presented, aiming at analyzing eventual differences in thinking between people who are interested in computers and people who are not familiar with computers. In the first study, mathematical and logical tasks were used, where a positive transfer effect from computer interest was expected. In the second study, creative and verbal tasks were added, in order to study the eventual negative effect of computer interest. Students in computer science were compared to students in psychology. In the first study it was found that computer science students used logic and formal reasoning to greater extent than psychology students did. In the second study psychology students excelled in practical creativity.

Veer, Gerrit van der, Tauber, Michael J., Waern, Yvonne and Muylwijk, Bert Van (1985): On the Interaction between System and User Characteristics. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 4 (4) pp. 289-308

The development of a representational framework, based on Moran's Command Language Grammar, for constructing adaptive computer systems is the main topic of this paper. A model of the user interface is developed of which two aspects are discussed: the mental model in the mind of the user and the perceptual model on the side of the machine. Cognitive style and personality factors are considered in their relation to the development of the mental model. The concept of metacommunication is analysed and discussed on all levels of Moran's CLG.

Waern, Yvonne (1985): Learning Computerized Tasks as Related to Prior Task Knowledge. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 22 (4) pp. 441-455

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the relationships between the requirements of a computerized task and people's knowledge of this task outside the computer system. The analysis is based on the goals to be reached, the methods which may be used, and the conditions which must be satisfied for each method to be used, with or without the computer system. It is suggested that it will be most difficult to learn a computerized task when new methods are related to old goals and/or when old methods require new conditions to be satisfied. Empirical observations supporting analyses of different tasks are presented. The empirical data reveal difficulties which are not predicted by the theoretical analyses, and it is concluded that a good prediction of the ease with which a new system is learnt can only result from a combination of theoretical analyses and empirical observations of users working with the system.

Linde, Lena and Waern, Yvonne (1985): On Search in an Incomplete Database. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 22 (5) pp. 563-579

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the psychological factors which are important for the efficient use of information from an incomplete database. Ten psychology students were instructed to answer a question by searching for information in a database. The question was not directly answerable but required the subjects to make inferences from the information retrieved. The following differences were found between the most and the least efficient subjects: the more efficient subjects started by obtaining an overview of the alternative search words available. They used the information obtained both to find possible answers and to exclude impossible ones. The more efficient subjects used prior knowledge schemata to make inferences, which yielded fewer possible candidates than the prior knowledge schemata used by the less efficient subjects. The less efficient subjects became more confused by the different possibilities, forgot information retrieved and repeated searches. It was concluded that an efficient search in an incomplete database requires that people have an overview of the alternatives offered. It also requires that one should make inferences from the information obtained in order to form possible hypotheses and to reject impossible alternatives.

Muylwijk, Bert Van, Veer, Gerrit van der and Waern, Yvonne (1983): On the Implications of User Variability in Open Systems: An Overview of the Little We Know and of the Lot We Have to Find Out. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 2 (4) pp. 313-326

As the use of computers increases, the cost of educating computer users rises. Therefore the need for extensive education of users should be avoided as much as possible. Instead computer systems should be adapted to the requirements and characteristics of computer users. Hereby the need to identify user characteristics arises. The less computer educated the users, the more their requirements of the systems will differ. Where user characteristics are difficult to change, it will be worthwhile to attend to user differences in the design of systems. The implications of user differences may vary depending upon the type of task to be performed. The present paper presents an analysis of different user characteristics and their possible interactions with different task requirements. Hereby some recommendations regarding the need to educate users or adapt systems to the user were derived.

Waern, Yvonne and Rollenhagen, Carl (1983): Reading Text from Visual Display Units (VDUs). In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 18 (5) pp. 441-465

This article presents an analysis of the task facing people, who have to read text from VDUs. Psychological research related to different aspects of this task is reviewed. First, situational factors are considered. It is suggested that the VDU situation may lead to fatigue and stress, which may decrease performance. Then a task analysis is performed, where potential difficulties and advantages of the VDU presentation are pointed out. Psychological investigations of text processing are then reviewed, with particular consideration of research methodology and text processing theory. Finally, some conclusions for planning research in this area are presented.
