Rude, Daniel, Campanelli, Lucio and Mu, Xiangming (2011): Experimental solutions for searching in an architectural and urban planning-specific database. In: Proceedings of the 2011 iConference 2011. pp. 653-654.

This paper studies the search behavior of an image search retrieval system using the model of an architectural and urban planning database. In this mixed-method study, interviews and surveys were conducted to identify unique search behaviors employed by student-workers at Community Design Solutions, a non-profit architectural and urban planning organization at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) located at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The study looked for users to indicate the problems with the search strategies they formulated to navigate the current database, the problems they encountered and any suggestions they had for improving the system. Based off of the findings, we found that a lack of metadata and associated text, users had a very difficult time locating related images. From this, we propose a proximity retrieval system.

Mu, Xiangming (2006): A content-based video browsing system based on visual neighbor similarity. In: JCDL06: Proceedings of the 6th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2006. p. 373.

A new interactive shot level video navigation system is developed to support three types of content-based browsing functions: Neighbor clustering, Visual similarity, and Visual Neighbor Similarity (VNS) browsing..

Mu, Xiangming (2006): Supporting semantic visual feature browsing in content-based video retrieval. In: Proceedings of the 29th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 2006. p. 734.

A new shot level video retrieval system that supports semantic visual features (e.g., car, mountain, and fire) browsing is developed to facilitate content-based retrieval. The video's binary semantic feature vector is utilized to calculate the score of similarity between two shot keyframes. The score is then used to browse the "similar" keyframes in terms of semantic visual features.

Mu, Xiangming, Marchionini, Gary and Pattee, Amy (2003): The interactive shared educational environment: user interface, system architecture and field study. In: JCDL03: Proceedings of the 3rd ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2003. pp. 291-300.

The user interface and system architecture of a novel Interactive Shared Educational Environment (ISEE) are presented. Based on a lightweight infrastructure, ISEE enables relatively low bandwidth network users to share videos as well as text messages. Smartlink is a new concept introduced in this paper. Individual information presentation components, like the video player and text chat room, are "smartly" linked together through video timestamps and hyperlinks. A field study related to children book selections using ISEE was conducted. The results indicated that the combination of three information presentation components, including video player with storyboard, shared browser, and text chat room, provided an effective and more comfortable collaboration and learning environment for the given tasks than text reviews or text chat alone or in combination. The video player was the most preferred information component. Text comments in the chat room that did not synchronize with the video content distracted some participants due to limited cognitive capacity. Using smartlink to synchronize various information components or "channels" is our attempt to reduce the user's working memory load in information enriched distance learning environments made possible by digital libraries.

Mu, Xiangming and Marchionini, Gary (2003): Statistical visual feature indexes in video retrieval. In: Proceedings of the 26th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 2003. pp. 395-396.

Four statistical visual feature indexes are proposed: SLM (Shot Length Mean), the average length of each shot in a video; SLD (Shot Length Deviation), the standard deviation of shot lengths for a video; ONM (Object Number Mean), the average number of objects per frame of the video; and OND (Object Number Deviation), the standard deviation of the number of objects per frame across the video. Each of these indexes provides a unique perspective on video content. A novel video retrieval interface has been developed as a platform to examine our assumption that the new indexes facilitate some video retrieval tasks. Initial feedback is promising and formal experiments are planned.
