... there are no simple 'right' answers for most web design questions (at least not for the important ones). What works is good, integrated design that fills a need--carefully thought out, well executed, and tested.

DiMicco, Joan Morris, Hollenbach, Katherine J, Pandolfo, Anna and Bender, Walter (2007): The Impact of Increased Awareness while Face-to-Face. In Human-Computer Interaction, 22 (1) pp. 47-96.
This article presents Second Messenger, a system of dynamic awareness displays that reveal speaker participation patterns in a face-to-face discussion. The system has been used by a variety of groups during face-to-face meetings, increasing individuals' awareness of their own and others' participation in discussions. Experimental results indicate that these displays influence the amount an individual participates in a discussion and the process of information sharing used during a decision-making task. These findings suggest that awareness applications bring about systematic changes in group communication styles, highlighting the potential for such applications to be designed to improve group interactions.

Vemuri, Sunil, DeCamp, Philip, Bender, Walter and Schmandt, Chris (2004): Improving speech playback using time-compression and speech recognition. In: Dykstra-Erickson, Elizabeth and Tscheligi, Manfred (eds.) Proceedings of ACM CHI 2004 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 24-29, 2004, Vienna, Austria. pp. 295-302.
Despite the ready availability of digital recording technology and the continually decreasing cost of digital storage, browsing audio recordings remains a tedious task. This paper presents evidence in support of a system designed to assist with information comprehension and retrieval tasks from a large collection of recorded speech. Two techniques are employed to assist users with these tasks. First, a speech recognizer creates necessarily error-laden transcripts of the recorded speech. Second, audio playback is time-compressed using the SOLAFS technique. When used together, subjects are able to perform comprehension tasks with more speed and accuracy.

DiMicco, Joan Morris and Bender, Walter (2004): Second messenger: increasing the visibility of minority viewpoints with a face-to-face collaboration tool. In: Nunes, Nuno Jardim and Rich, Charles (eds.) International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2004 January 13-16, 2004, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. pp. 232-234.
This paper introduces the application Second Messenger, a tool for supporting face-to-face meetings and discussions. Second Messenger uses a speech-recognition engine as an input method and outputs filtered keywords from the group's conversation onto an interactive display. The goal of this interface is to improve the quality of a group discussion by increasing the visibility of diverse viewpoints.

DiMicco, Joan Morris, Pandolfo, Anna and Bender, Walter (2004): Influencing group participation with a shared display. In: Proceedings of ACM CSCW04 Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work 2004. pp. 614-623.
During face-to-face interactions, groups frequently overly rely on the dominant viewpoint to lead the group in its decision-making process. We begin with a discussion of this phenomenon and the possibility for technology to assist in addressing it. We then present findings from a behavioral study that examines how a shared display of individual speaker-participation rates can impact the behavior of the group during a collaboration task. The results from the study indicate that the presence of such a display influences the behavior of group participants in the extremes of over and under participation. While influencing the quantity of time someone speaks is not directly equivalent to influencing the topics discussed, we suggest that this approach of providing peripheral displays of social information is promising for improving certain types of group interactions.

Bender, Walter, Crespo, Ruth Ann, Kennedy, Peter J. and Oakley, Richard (1987): CRT Typeface Design and Evaluation. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 31st Annual Meeting 1987. pp. 1311-1314.
Reading text from a video display screen is a relatively new modality of human communication. This new technology presents advantages and limitations never considered in the design of typefaces for printed communication. It is well know that people read faster from printed text than from a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). This paper discussed some of the current work to improve CRT readability. Specifically, we have developed software to be used by a typography designer to design anti-aliased (or "grayscale") CRT typefaces. A new anti-aliased typeface was designed and tested for readability. It was found that readability was significantly improved with this new typeface. This paper describes some of our recent work in this area. The typeface design software and examples of text rendered in a new typeface will be demonstrated on an analog color display.
