Tomás Dorta studied architecture at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. He practiced as an architect in some interior and architectural design offices in Caracas, and since 1993 in Montreal, when he started his graduate studies at the University of Montreal. In his ten years of professional practice, he developed a wide experience, covering architectural, interior, and industrial design. His research interests include the influence of computer 3D visualization and new technologies in design, and the development of new techniques of design in the virtual realm. He obtained his Master’s Degree (1994) and his Ph.D. (2001), studying the Impact of Virtual Reality as a Visualization tool into the Design process. His research has been published and presented in several international scientific conferences, including ICSID, ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, EuropIA, SIGraDi and IHM as well as other scientific and vulgarization magazines treating digital design. As a design educator, he started as a Lecturer at the School of Industrial Design of the University of Montreal in 1997. He joined this School as Visiting professor in 2000, Assistant Professor in 2003, and since then, he teaches Computer Graphics courses and Industrial design studios related to new technologies and bionics. Tomás Dorta taught at the Department of Design Art of Concordia University from 2002 to 2004 as part time professor teaching Computer Graphics courses and Design Studios. He is actually research member of the MATI (École Polytechnique de Montréal) as well as of the Institute for Research/Creation in Media Arts and Technologies, Hexagram.
