... there are no simple 'right' answers for most web design questions (at least not for the important ones). What works is good, integrated design that fills a need--carefully thought out, well executed, and tested.

-- Steve Krug, Don't Make Me Think, p. 136

Current place of employment:
Royal College of Art

Stephen is responsible for the development of staff research in the School of Design at the Royal College of Art. The department includes Design Interactions, Design Products, Innovation Design Engineering, Vehicle Design and Rapid Prototyping. Previously Stephen ran the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts, a University Research Centre at Middlesex University UK dedicated to interdisciplinary work in digital media. He also ran the Art and Design Research Institute there. Stephen’s wide-ranging interests include novel forms of interaction and spatialised media. A particular focus is visual representation, including issues of depiction and visual realism across multiple forms of media, and interacting with such representations. He shared a Leverhulme Award investigating the use of three-dimensional models of historical time and directed a Wellcome Trust project which exploited novel forms of mapping in portable devices. Originally a textile designer, Stephen retains an interest in designing for pleasure rather than just for utility. His most recent work is concerned with chronographics - the visual representation of historical time.
