Klann, Markus, Malizia, Alessio, Chittaro, Luca, Cuevas, Ignacio Aedo and Levialdi, Stefano (2008): HCI for emergencies. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 5-10, 2008. pp. 3945-3948. Available online

Emergencies put people in a particular state of mind and often also in difficult physical situations. When designing information technology for emergencies, these two sides have to be taken into account in the various activities supporting design. This includes studying and understanding the users and the influential factors for good designs, engaging the users in the design process as well as evaluating designs in realistic ways. There are challenges specific to emergencies in all of these activities, as well as in new technologies ranging from wearable computing to distributed information systems. This workshop is meant as an opportunity for interdisciplinary discussion as well as practical hands-on exchange of experiences regarding these challenges. The goal is to work towards a better understanding of the challenges, technologies, practices, and design methodologies relevant to HCI in emergencies.

Ardito, C., Costabile, Maria Francesca, Marsico, M. De, Lanzilotti, R., Levialdi, Stefano, Roselli, T. and Rossano, V. (2006): An approach to usability evaluation of e-learning applications. In Universal Access in the Information Society, 4 (3) pp. 270-283

Despite recent advances of electronic technologies in e-learning, a consolidated evaluation methodology for e-learning applications is not available. The evaluation of educational software must consider its usability and more in general its accessibility, as well as its didactic effectiveness. This work is a first step towards the definition of a methodology for evaluating e-learning applications. Specific usability attributes capturing the peculiar features of these applications are identified. A preliminary user study involving a group of e-students, observed during their interaction with an e-learning application in a real situation, is reported. Then, the proposal is put forward to adapt to the e-learning domain a methodology for systematic usability evaluation, called SUE. Specifically, evaluation patterns are proposed that are able to drive the evaluators in the analysis of an e-learning application.

Tanimoto, Steven L. and Levialdi, Stefano (2006): A transparent interface to state-space search programs. In: Proceedings of the ACM Symposium on Software Visualization 2006. pp. 151-152. Available online

We present a visual interface for a variety of programs that employ state-space search methods. The interface displays a tree of the states visited so far, and it permits user interaction through manipulation of the tree. The interface is implemented in a domain-independent Python module. We give illustrations of its application in three domains: classical problem solving, image processing, and composition of musical motifs. The interface exemplifies a class of techniques for bringing a form of transparency to computer systems.

Marsico, Maria De and Levialdi, Stefano (2004): Evaluating web sites: exploiting user's expectations. In International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 60 (3) pp. 381-416

A new goal-based approach to measure usability of web sites is presented, strongly taking into account the customers' expectations, which are often hardly foreseeable as a whole. After a general discussion on web site design issues, we present a short survey of evaluation methods currently used for web sites. We next introduce a new taxonomy of site categories in a three-dimensional space, derived from Aristotle's rhetorical triangle, including different aspects of the site designer's goals. In our approach, we use this taxonomy to identify a number of sites belonging to the same category, in order to carry out a comparative analysis of their features. This analysis is the basis for a two-shot generation of a form for the evaluation of that category of sites. In the first shot, the users fill a generic evaluation form, acquainting them with sites characteristics. They are next asked to perform specific tasks of their choice, according to what they expect from a site of the given category. They note their impressions and list those features they found useful; the analysis of their comments is exploited to formulate statements specific to the given category, to be added to the initial form (second shot). We found that the responses to the second, expanded form, provide more comprehensive criteria for site evaluation, and turn helpful to precisely locate flaws in site functionalities. After testing, our methodology has proved very promising and may be applied for the evaluation of any other site category, most of all those providing a set of special services.

Ardito, Carmelo, Costabile, Maria Francesca, Marsico, Marilena De, Lanzilotti, Rosa, Levialdi, Stefano, Plantamura, Paola, Roselli, Teresa, Rossano, Veronica and Tersigni, Manuela (2004): Towards Guidelines for Usability of e-Learning Applications. In: Proceedings of the 8th ERCIM Workshop on User Interfaces for All 2004. p. 185. Available online

One present goal of researchers and developers is to design software tools that make learning materials available online in an educationally effective manner. We face the twofold challenge of implementing advanced e-learning functionalities, though designing their interface so as to provide an easy interaction grasping the students interest. A poorly designed interface makes students spend more time in learning it than in mastering the provided knowledge, so becoming a barrier to effective learning. In this context, both User-Centered Design (UCD) and Learner-Centered Design (LCD) guidelines are needed; it is also important to devise suited evaluation tools, able to help in identifying usability, and, more in general, accessibility flaws. Such tools must be designed bearing in mind the specific characteristics of e-learning applications. Traditional heuristic evaluation appears too general and subjective. In this paper, we propose a set of guidelines and criteria for e-learning platforms (containers) and for educational modules (contents), to be used within the SUE (Systematic Usability Evaluation) inspection. We point out that human factors experts can primarily evaluate syntactic aspects of applications. Experts of education science and domain experts are to be involved for a more comprehensive evaluation.

Proceedings of the 6th ERCIM Workshop on User Interfaces for All October 25-26, 2000, Florence, Italy. p. 12. Available online

End-user computing requires that end-users trust the system and the results obtained by its use. The approach we have elaborated at the Pictorial Computing Laboratory of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" is the result of several experiments through the years in design and use of end-user visual computing systems and is aimed at improving the system trustworthiness. To this end, our approach adopts the notation developed by the users in their working environment as the kernel for the Visual Language used during human-computer interaction, supports users while navigating in the virtual space by establishing a system of cornerstones, within a scaffold, and provides control on the system to trap user slips and errors. The paper reports and discusses some results from our experience in the design and use of end-users visual environments.

At the opening Plenary of CHI 96, Herbert Clark challenged human-computer interface design to emulate some of the graceful repair found in face-to-face conversation. However, the dominant paradigm in recent user-interface design has been one of action, not communication -- direct manipulation, not commands. In day-to-day life we find the transition between the worlds of action and communication problematic, so it is not surprising that we experience similar problems in the computer world. Nowhere is this transition more marked than when using undo -- we are forced to think about what we have just done -- breakdown.

The Pictorial Computing Laboratory (PCL) evolves its past experience in image processing and pattern recognition to the design of interactive systems. In the last ten years, a model for visual interactive computing has been developed based on the following abstraction: in interactive activities human beings communicate with computers through digital messages representing (part of) the state of the computation. Such a model, called Com{sup:2}, is described, and an interaction with a system, developed following it, is shown as example, thus highlighting the use of visual languages for human-computer interaction.
