Gilmore, David J., Cockton, Gilbert, Churchill, Elizabeth F., Kujala, Sari, Henderson, Austin and Hammontree, Monty (2008): Values, value and worth: their relationship to HCI?. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 5-10, 2008. pp. 3933-3936. Available online

This workshop explores the territory of 'value-centered HCI' with the intention of freeing us from the tricky complexity of this topic and the multiple meanings of the words 'value' and 'values'.

Kujala, Sari and Kauppinen, Marjo (2004): Identifying and selecting users for user-centered design. In: Proceedings of the Third Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction October 23-27, 2004, Tampere, Finland. pp. 297-303. Available online

It is critical to the success of a system that appropriate and representative users are involved in the development work. However, the process of identifying and selecting users has not been a focus of research. In this paper, we describe a process of identifying and selecting relevant users specifically for field studies. Characterization and sampling of users are discussed. In addition, a way of describing user groups is suggested. Finally, we summarize results from seven case studies in six different companies. The case studies show that developers tend to underestimate the diversity of users and that a systematic process helps to identify the different user groups, select representative users and identify representative user needs. It was found that identification of users' characteristics and groups is an iterative process, and user descriptions evolve when real data are gathered from users.

Kujala, Sari (2003): User involvement: a review of the benefits and challenges. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 22 (1) pp. 1-16

User involvement is a widely accepted principle in development of usable systems. However, it is a vague concept covering many approaches. This study first clarifies the nature of user involvement and its expected benefits, and secondly reviews three streams of research, to evaluate the benefits and problems of varied user involvement approaches in practice. The particular focus of this study is on the early activities in the development process. An analysis of the literature suggests that user involvement has generally positive effects, especially on user satisfaction, and some evidence exists to suggest that taking users as a primary information source is an effective means of requirements capture. However, the role of users must be carefully considered and more cost-efficient practices are needed for gathering users' implicit needs and requirements in real product development contexts.

Kujala, Sari and Mantyla, Martti (2000): Studying Users for Developing Usable and Useful Products. In: Proceedings of the First Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 2000. .

This article presents a framework for studying users in order to support designers in constructing usable and useful consumer products. The framework is aimed at designing consumer products for which users cannot be specified in advance, long lasting observations of users are difficult or impossible to arrange, and the time frames available are short. We discuss what kind of end user information is needed, how to gather it, and how to transfer the results to designers. We applied the developed framework in a case study and found that it is capable of providing a reasonable depth of knowledge in a short time frame with low costs. Comments from designers indicate that the methods give concrete input to design work, such as the necessary feature composition users need. Finally, we draw out a number of lessons learned.

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience.
