Human Factors practitioners in engineering and manufacturing firms have significant challenges in applying and assuring the implementation of usability features in products designed for commercial markets. Educational programs, specialized training, and in general, the direction of the human factors profession which emphasize empirical methodologies and promotion of attitudes which reinforce the classical approach to applied research are often inappropriate for contributing to product developments. Root causes of the discrepancy between the use of formal Human Factors methodologies and the challenge of using these in product development are traceable to the origins of our profession. Frank discussion is needed within the profession to address this growing concern. The purpose of this panel is to provide insight into techniques used by practicing human factors professionals, foster discussions on how we can broaden the application of our discipline, and contribute more effectively to solving the challenges of integrating technology with users. Panelist represent a cross section of human factors specialists from product development firms. Each member promotes a different approach to practicing human factors; these approaches will help broaden the influence of our profession. A summary of these approaches is presented below.

Since the accident at Three-mile Island, many efforts have been initiated to provide human factors guidance and standards in the power industry. These guidelines and criteria along with military standards and specifications and general guidelines and criteria now exist in a multitude of documents that have been developed over a twenty year time frame. This paper describes efforts to consolidate this guidance into a single design criteria for the development of new reactor plants and to identify "gaps" in human factors standards relating to nuclear reactor design.

Waters, Robert M. (1987): Use of Structured Development Techniques to Specify the User-System Interface. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 31st Annual Meeting 1987. pp. 1425-1428.

The Human Factors Engineering products from the systems requirements phase of system development were transformed into techniques consistent with structured software development techniques. These techniques supported definition of the mission functions with the context diagram; the task list was compatible with the event list; and high level functional flow diagrams are consistent with the structured data flow diagrams. In addition, the sequenced task analysis procedures used provided a structured diagraming methodology in state transition diagrams. This technique provided a method for defining MMI requirements in software engineering terminology.
