Allen, Robert (2007): Highly structured scientific publications. In: JCDL07: Proceedings of the 7th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2007. p. 472. Available online

Science is a complex, but highly structured, activity. We propose that reports about science would benefit by reflecting that structure. We provide an example based on the research paradigm and we explore more complex examples in which workflow models describe the conceptual model, the research procedure, the data analysis, and the conclusions.

Song, Min, Song, Il Yeol, Allen, Robert and Obradovic, Zoran (2006): Keyphrase extraction-based query expansion in digital libraries. In: JCDL06: Proceedings of the 6th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2006. pp. 202-209. Available online

In pseudo-relevance feedback, the two key factors affecting the retrieval performance most are the source from which expansion terms are generated and the method of ranking those expansion terms. In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised query expansion technique that utilizes keyphrases and POS phrase categorization. The keyphrases are extracted from the retrieved documents and weighted with an algorithm based on information gain and co-occurrence of phrases. The selected keyphrases are translated into Disjunctive Normal Form (DNF) based on the POS phrase categorization technique for better query refomulation. Furthermore, we study whether ontologies such as WordNet and MeSH improve the retrieval performance in conjunction with the keyphrases. We test our techniques on TREC 5, 6, and 7 as well as a MEDLINE collection. The experimental results show that the use of keyphrases with POS phrase categorization produces the best average precision.

Allen, Robert (2005): A focus-context browser for multiple timelines. In: JCDL05: Proceedings of the 5th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2005. pp. 260-261. Available online

Events may be best understood in the context of other events. We can call a set of related events a "timeline", because of the temporal ordering. Such timelines are themselves best understood in the context of other timelines. To facilitate the exploration of a collection of events and timelines, a visualization tool has been developed that facilitates the user's ability to compare and browse across events and timelines. In this model, each event is accompanied by a text description and links to related resources such as articles from digitized historical newspapers.

Allen, Robert (2004): A query interface for an event gazetteer. In: JCDL04: Proceedings of the 4th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2004. pp. 72-73. Available online

We introduce an event gazetteer which stores and presents "locations in time". Each event is coded with attributes of event type, location, actor, and beginning and ending times. Events can also contain sets of other events. This paper reports the development of an interface for generating searches to these "part-of" relationships. For instance, we can search for all named Battles in the event database which occurred during the Civil War. Ultimately, we envision a flexible, broad-based service that is a resource for users ranging from students to genealogists and researchers interested in historical events.

Allen, Robert and Acheson, Jane (2000): Browsing the Structure of Multimedia Stories. In: DL00: Proceedings of the 5th ACM International Conference on Digital Libraries 2000. pp. 11-18. Available online

Stories may be analyzed as sequences of causally-related events and reactions to those events by the characters. We employ a notation of plot elements, similar to one developed by Lehnert, and we extend that by forming higher level "story threads" Stories may be analyzed as sequences of causally-related events and reactions to those events by the characters. We employ a notation of plot elements, similar to one developed by Lehnert, and we extend that by forming higher level "story threads". We apply the browser to Corduroy, a children's short feature which was analyzed in detail. We provide additional illustrations with analysis of Kiss of Death, a Film Noir classic. Effectively, the browser provides a framework for interactive summaries, video of the narrative.

Kumar, Vijay, Furuta, Richard and Allen, Robert (1998): Metadata Visualization for Digital Libraries: Interactive Timeline Editing and Review. In: DL98: Proceedings of the 3rd ACM International Conference on Digital Libraries 1998. pp. 126-133. Available online

Interactive Timeline Editing and Review (ITER), a general framework for modeling and presenting temporal information, is described. In addition, the tmViewer interface is described for viewing temporal and other metadata. ITER and tmViewer go beyond previous electronic timeline displays in treating timelines as hypertexts and structured documents, and allowing interactive display of the metadata in addition to the events. The use of the tool is described for exploring bibliographic records, such as search hits from the book database available at amazon.com, and for the presentation of timelines.

Allen, Robert, Obry, Pascal and Littman, Michael (1993): An Interface for Navigating Clustered Document Sets Returned by Queries. In: Kaplan, Simon M. (ed.) Proceedings of the ACM Conference on Organizational Computing Systems 1993 November 1-4, 1993, Milpitas, California, USA. pp. 166-171. Available online

An interface has been implemented for exploring the structure of document sets returned in response to a query. The interface allows a user to find subsets of documents that are especially relevant to the query through interaction with an interactive dendrogram which displays a hierarchical clustering of the documents. Dynamic lists of document titles are interlocked with the dendrogram to provide detail of the clusters being viewed by the user. For efficiency, the interface has been implemented in several parallel and distributed computation environments and has been applied to retrieval of encyclopedia articles and news stories.

Allen, Robert (1990): User Models: Theory, Method, and Practice. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 32 (5) pp. 511-543

While the technology of new information services is rapidly advancing, it is not clear how this technology can be best adapted to people's needs and interests. One possibility is that user models may select and filter information sources for readers. This paper examines the prospects and implications of automatic filtering of information, and focuses on predicting preferences for news articles presented electronically. The results suggest that the prediction of preferences can be straightforward when general categories for news articles are used; however, prediction for specific news reports is much more difficult. In addition, an effort is made to establish a systematic study of the effectiveness of information interfaces and user models. Fundamental issues are raised such as techniques for evaluating user models, their essential components, their relationship to information retrieval models, and the limits of using them to predict user behavior at various levels of granularity. For instance, prediction and evaluation methodology may be adopted from personality psychology. Finally, several directions for research are discussed such as treating news as hypertext and integration of news with other information sources.

Allen, Robert (1989): A New Name -- ACM Transactions on Information Systems. In ACM Transactions on Information Systems, 7 (1) p. 1

With this issue the Transactions becomes the ACM Transaction on Information Systems (TOIS). In addition, TOIS' charter has been expanded to formally include the field of Information Retrieval. These changes affirm the broad scope that the journal has been pursuing in recent years. As before, a wide variety of perspectives on information systems will be considered, including topics such as user and organizational interfaces, data models, system organization, knowledge bases, and new media. Of course, TOIS will also continue to examine the uses and impact of information systems. Thus, papers in areas such as electronic publishing, interactive video services, large text archives, UIMSs, intelligent tutoring systems, and cooperative work are encouraged. TOIS is primarily a research journal with an emphasis on quality and originality, as well as relevance. Moreover, TOIS has a Practice and Experience Section for papers that present novel insights without the usual rigor of Research Contributions. Together, the Associate Editors and I are committed to keeping TOIS the premier publication in its field. We will also strive to make TOIS a testbed for new information systems.

Allen, Robert (1983): Composition and Editing of Spoken Letters. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 19 (2) pp. 181-193

Two studies examine issues relating to composing and editing spoken letters. In the first study participants used a prototype speech editor. In the second study, participants composed letters with a tape-recorder and later identified which parts of those letters whey would like to edit. The data on the speech-editing system suggest that it is usable, but substantial improvements would be desirable. Together, the studies showed that revisions made to spoken letters were generally similar to the types of revisions found previously for written documents. However, previous findings on the details on planning times during the composition of spoken letters were contradicted.

Allen, Robert and Scerbo, Mark (1983): Details of Command-Language Keystrokes. In ACM Transactions on Information Systems, 1 (2) pp. 159-178

The Keystroke-Level Model asserts that the time for an expert to enter a task using a command language is a function of specific task-acquisition, mental, and motor-response times. The evidence for the model is critically reviewed, and new data are presented. The fit of the new data to the model is modest even when several modifications of the model are considered. It is proposed that a more complex model, based explicitly on cognitive processes, is necessary.

Allen, Robert (1982): Patterns of Manuscript Revisions. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 1 (2) pp. 177-184

Revisions made by authors to their own manuscripts were studied in order to derive general principles of editing behavior and factors that might be useful in the design of text editors. Among the dependent variables were the amount of material in each edit and the frequency of different classes of edits. Edits of single words were found to be especially common and the most frequent class of edit was changes. Furthermore, edits were not randomly distributed throughout the papers but tended to be clustered.

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience.
