Author: Richard Coyne

Ph.D

Richard Coyne is Professor of Architectural Computing at the University of Edinburgh where he was Head of the School of Arts, Culture and Environment (which covered the disciplines of architecture, history of art and music) until its merger with Edinburgh College of Art. Coyne is an architect by training and attempts to bring a design-oriented and spatial understanding to his research and writing on digital themes.Richard's research is conducted within the Digital Media Design research group. He collaborates with John Lee, Martin Parker and a team of about 10 PhD students and research associates. Research themes interact with project work in a suite of digital MSc programmes.

Richard researches and teaches in information technology in practice, computer-aided design in architecture, the philosophy of information technology, digital media, and design theory. He inaugurated the MSc in Design and Digital Media, in which he also teaches. Richard is Academic Director of the MSc in Design and Digital Media, and Programme Director of the MSc by Research in Digital Media and Culture. Richard is author of several books on the implications of information technology and design with MIT Press and Routledge. His research has been supported by AHRC, EPSRC and SCRAN.

Richard's research demonstrates the value of a broad interdisciplinary framework for examining the relationship between computing, design, and contemporary cultural theories. He is currently investigating the way we configure spaces through the use of pervasive mobile devices, such as mobile phones, iPods and GPS. Richard is developing this theme through the sonic metaphor of tuning. He recently completed a book for the Routledge Thinkers for Architects series entitled Derrida for Architects. He is a registered architect (Australia), and previously worked at the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne. Richard was Head of the Architecture Department from 1999 to 2002 and was recently Director of the Graduate School of the School of Arts, Culture and Environment. He has been the ACE Head of School since August 2007.
