Bodker, Susanne and Andersen, Peter B. (2005): Complex Mediation. In Human-Computer Interaction, 20 (4) pp. 353-402
This article has its starting point in a large number of empirical findings regarding computer-mediated work. These empirical findings have challenged our understanding of the role of mediation in such work; on the one hand as an aspect of communication and cooperation at work and on the other hand as an aspect of human engagement with instruments of work. On the basis of previous work in activity-theoretical and semiotic human -- computer interaction, we propose a model to encompass both of these aspects. In a dialogue with our empirical findings we move on to propose a number of types of mediation that have helped to enrich our understanding of mediated work and the design of computer mediation for such work.

Andersen, Peter B. (1992): Vector Spaces as the Basic Component of Interactive Systems: Towards a Computer Semiotics. In Hypermedia, 4 (1) pp. 53-76
The practical point of departure is design and implementation of interactive multimedia applications. The focus is on the aesthetic aspects, ranging from graphical display to narratives structures. In particular, I am interested in developing a theory of narration that exploits the special dynamic characteristics of computer systems, namely that the reader can interact with the system and the system can act itself. It is suggested that a vector space consisting of objects and vectors can form the basis for such a theory; its basic narrative unit is the vector, a force emanating from an object that either attracts other objects or repels them. An interactive multimedia product will contain sets of vector spaces, each with a simple internal structure but with the ability to generate a richness of events, most of which may not even have occurred to the author. The paper presents arguments in favor of the vector in the domain of interactive narratives and public information systems. A final section suggests that Rene Thom's catastrophe theory may provide a theoretical basis for the ideas.

Andersen, Peter B. (1990): Towards an Aesthetics of Hypertext Systems. A Semiotic Approach. In: Rizk, Antoine, Streitz, Norbert A. and Andre, Jacques (eds.) ECHT 90 - European Conference on Hypertext November 27-30, 1990, Versailles, France. pp. 224-237.
In hypertext the reader can choose between several reading paths, and this is an essential characteristic of the medium. Composing paths that give meaningful readings is an important task for the hypertext author, but so far very little is known of the "rhetorics of paths". Based on the practical work of evaluating hypertext exercises written by students, the paper gives examples of errors of composition and sets up a conceptual framework, borrowed from semiotics, for discussing aesthetic issues of hypertext design. The concepts are intended to make it easier for the author to design the product from a reader's point of view, and an authoring tool supporting these concepts is sketched. Finally, the paper illustrates how insights from text stylistics and film aesthetics can be usefully exploited in the field of hypertext.
