Sharples, Mike, Goodlet, James and Clutterbuck, Andrew (1994): A Comparison of Algorithms for Hypertext Notes Network Linearization. In International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 40 (4) pp. 727-752

New computer-based writing environments are being developed which combine a hypertext "ideas organizer" with a text editor. We compare two algorithms which could be used in such environments for turning networks of notes indicating ideas into linear draft documents. The algorithms are designed to produce a linear ordering of the notes which is acceptable to the writer as a first draft of the document. We report on experiments to test their effectiveness. Subjects were asked to create notes networks which were then linearized by the two algorithms. The resulting linearizations, plus a random ordering of nodes and a linearization created by hand, were assessed for textual organization. The experiments indicate that both algorithms produce linearizations which are acceptable as draft texts, that the "best first" algorithm is marginally superior to the "hillclimbing" one, and that providing information to the algorithms about link types had little effect on their effectiveness. The paper concludes by describing an implementation of the best first algorithm as part of the Writer's Assistant writing environment.

Sharples, Mike (1993): A Study of Breakdowns and Repairs in a Computer-Mediated Communication System. In Interacting with Computers, 5 (1) pp. 61-77

There have been few naturalistic studies of synchronous computer-mediated communication. For two years a telewriting system was used for tutoring students at the UK Open University, connecting up to ten study centres and adding graphic communication to voice-only teleconferencing. This paper presents the findings of a study of the operation of the system, concentrating on breakdowns in communication and the technical and organisational changes needed to overcome them. The paper concludes with recommendations for the design of future telewriting systems and guidelines for the deployment of computer-mediated communication systems as part of working life.

O'Malley, Claire and Sharples, Mike (1986): Tools for Management and Support of Multiple Constraints in a Writer's Assistant. In: Harrison, Michael D. and Monk, Andrew (eds.) Proceedings of the Second Conference of the British Computer Society Human Computer Interaction Specialist Group - People and Computers II August 23-26, 1986, University of York, UK. pp. 115-131.

Conventional text editors have limitations that make them ill-suited to composing and manipulating large pieces of structural text. Recently, several researchers have begun to develop a new generation of text editors that act as "writer's assistants", allowing the user to view and alter the organisational structure of text, as well as providing tools to support related tasks, such as spelling correction and proofreading. These systems represent major progress in the development of writing, as opposed to editing, tools. However, they have two important limitations. Firstly, they do not appear to be derived from an explicit model of the writing process -- one that is based on observations of expert writers. Secondly, and as a result, they are limited in their ability to represent and satisfy the constraints involved in writing. This paper sets out a framework for the design of a Writer's Assistant, based on a model derived from current research on the writing process. The system would give support to the user engaged in a variety of writing tasks, by explicitly representing the structure of text at various levels, by providing tools for the manipulation and transformation of such structures, and by taking over some of the demands of planning and constraint satisfaction.

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience.
