Michitaka Hirose is a professor of Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo. His research interests include human interface, interactive computer graphics, wearable computer and virtual reality. He was a project leader of Multimedia Virtual Laboratory project and Scalable VR Contents project sponsored by ministry of general affairs. Prof. Hirose received BE, ME and Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1977, 1979 and 1982 respectively. He is a member of the ACM, IEEE, SICE and VRSJ(Virtual Reality Society of Japan).

The main contribution of this paper is to realize computer generated augmented flavors and establish a method to integrate gustatory information into computer human interactions. There are several reasons for the scarcity of research on gustatory information. One reason is that taste sensations are affected by a number of factors, such as vision, olfaction and memories. This produces a complex cognition mechanism for a user's gustatory sensation, and makes it difficult to build up a gustatory display which produces a specific taste on demand. Our hypothesis is that the complexity of gustatory sensation can be applied to the realization of a "Pseudo-gustatory" display that presents the desired flavors by means of a cross-modal effect elicited by visual and olfactory augmented reality. We propose the Edible Marker system, which can detect the state [number/shape/6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) coordinate] of each piece of bitten or divided food in real time, and the "Pseudo-gustation" method to change the perceived taste of food by changing its appearance and scent. We construct "MetaCookie+" as an implementation and discuss its validity through an exploratory study.

In this paper, we propose a ubiquitous augmented reality system that expands projected augmentations in wide area by using visible light communication and wireless tag. The system consists of wireless tags and a high-speed projector (DMD Discovery 3000), operating in 8kHz, attached on mobility platform. The projector transmits structured light patterns that contain different information in each pixel. Wireless tags can recognize their own locations in projected area by receiving structured light patterns projected from the projector. Since 3D coordinates of individual tag is stored in the system, projection point is estimated with 3D coordinates and pixel coordinates of each tag in projected area. According to the estimated position and orientation, augmented reality content is superimposed. The set of structured light patterns are projected in sufficient speed that human eye can only perceive the superimposed content. We have also evaluated the accuracy of superimposing augmented reality content on real world from moving projection points.

In recent years, most of traditional artisanship is declining because of aging skilled artisan and fewer successors. Therefore, methods for digital archiving of such traditional artisanship are needed. We have constructed a wearable skill-training interface that displays egocentric visual and audio information and muscle activities of an artisan. We used acceleration data of an instrument associated with the usage of the tools for evaluating the effect of proposed wearable display system. This paper introduces the concept and development of wearable egocentric display. Then briefly reports the application results in Kamisuki, Japanese traditional papermaking.

The use of large visual displays in public space has become increasingly popular. However, it is still difficult to install new displays in already existing buildings because of the large and rigid hardware associated with such displays. In this paper, we describe a highly integratable, easily and quickly installable, and lightweight display system for use in existing public buildings. We describe the technical design and implementation of the display system and describe an application of the display for public audiences.

In this research, we aim to realize a gustatory display that enhances our experience of enjoying food. However, generating a sense of taste is very difficult because the human gustatory system is quite complicated and is not yet fully understood. This is so because gustatory sensation is based on chemical signals whereas visual and auditory sensations are based on physical signals. In addition, the brain perceives flavor by combining the senses of gustation, smell, sight, warmth, memory, etc. The aim of our research is to apply the complexity of the gustatory system in order to realize a pseudo-gustatory display that presents flavors by means of visual feedback. This paper reports on the prototype system of such a display that enables us to experience various tastes without changing their chemical composition through the superimposition of virtual color. The fundamental thrust of our experiment is to evaluate the influence of cross-sensory effects by superimposing virtual color onto actual drinks and recording the responses of subjects who drink them. On the basis of experimental results, we concluded that visual feedback sufficiently affects our perception of flavor to justify the construction of pseudo-gustatory displays.

This paper presents the author's vision of Human Computer Biosphere Interaction (HCBI): Towards a Sustainable Society. HCBI extends the subject of HCI from countable people, objects, pets, and plants to an auditory biosphere that is uncountable, complex, and non-linguistic. By realizing HCBI, soundmarks in a forest can help us feel as one with nature, beyond the physical distance. The goal of HCBI is to realize the benefits of belonging to nature without causing environmental destruction. This paper presents the concept overview, related work, the method and developed interfaces.

In the real world, the sensation of force is felt when a real object comes into contact with a part of our body. This fact motivated us to the idea of creating artificial touch sensation by using some type of force feedback device. A prototype display device for simulating force sensation based on this idea was developed and called Surface Display. In previous research, the touch sensation was often discussed and many prototypes for force feedback were developed. However, most of these devices were designed from a conventional force feedback perspective, which has been developed mainly in the robotics field. In this paper, another approach for designing a force feedback device, a "mock-surface" method, is presented. Several prototype devices were implemented based on the approach and assessments were made from various point of view. This paper describes the conceptual design and implementation process as well as some experimental results.
