Schneider, Michael L., Hirsh-Pasek, K. and Nudelman, S. (1984): An Experimental Evaluation of Delimiters in a Command Language Syntax. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 20 (6) pp. 521-535

This article examines the effects of delimiters on the cognitive processes involved in command construction and interpretation. After a theoretical analysis of the impact of delimiters on commands, two techniques of delimiter usage were examined: single-level delimiters (space) and two-level hierarchical delimiters (space and comma). Using a within-subject experimental design with 20 subjects, we found that hierarchical delimiters improved the ability of individuals to distinguish fields and identify the grammatical correctness of the commands. This study suggests that the ability to organize elements of commands mentally is enhance when they consist of fields separated by one delimiter and items within fields by another delimiter. Other factors, not examined in this study, should have an impact on production. They may include the name of the command, the order in which operands are presented, and the experience level of the user.

Hirsh-Pasek, K., Nudelman, S. and Schneider, Michael L. (1982): An Experimental Evaluation of Abbreviation Schemes in Limited Lexicons. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 1 (4) pp. 359-369

Five abbreviation schemes (simple truncation, vowel drop, minimum to distinguish, phonics and user defined) were analysed for learning, encoding and decoding. Forty subjects were each tested on two schemes, using two different 20 word lexicons. Simple truncation was the easiest to learn, based upon a trials to criteria experiment. Using a modified tachistoscopic display, simple truncation was the best for encodability. Either vowel drop or phonics was the best scheme for decoding. It appears that information content is important in decoding, but not in encoding.

Computer programs emerge as the outcome of complex human processes of cognition, communication and negotiation, which serve to establish the meaningful embedding of the computer system in its intended use context.
