Blickensderfer, Beth, Boehm-Davis, Deborah A., Hancock, Peter, Parasuraman, Raja, Rogers, Wendy A. and Smith, Michael J. (2012): Fitts Education Award Winners: Teaching Human Factors and Ergonomics. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 2012 Annual Meeting 2012. pp. 566-570.

Every day, current Human Factors&Ergonomics (HF/E) professionals work to foster the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for their students to be future HF/E professionals. Experienced HF/E educators possess a wealth of knowledge of what works in regards to teaching their particular topics. Unfortunately, this valuable in-domain teaching knowledge and expertise often does not get disseminated to other HF/E educators. The purpose of the current panel is to provide a forum for professionals, who have been recognized for teaching excellence, to share their ideas and approaches with other educators. The panelists are recent winners of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society's Paul M. Fitts Education Award, an award that recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to HF/E education. The discussion will focus on three themes: strategies to integrate practical problems into the education process, suggestions for improving instructional effectiveness via mentoring skills, and HF/E teaching challenges.

Dickinson, Anna, Smith, Michael J., Arnott, John L., Newell, Alan F. and Hill, Robin L. (2007): Approaches to web search and navigation for older computer novices. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2007 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2007. pp. 281-290.

A proof of concept web search and navigation system was developed for older people for whom the Internet is seen as an alien territory. A joint industry/academia team deployed User Sensitive Inclusive Design principles, focusing on the usability of the interface for this user group. The search and navigation system that was developed was significantly preferred by the user group to that provided by a standard commercial (Internet Service Provider) system; it scored highly for ease of use and the participants reported increased confidence in their ability to master the Internet. Recorded quantitative measures showed fewer task errors. The outcome of the development was a successful "proof of concept" search and navigation system for older novice computer users together with approaches to design and development for those who wish to design for this user group.

Dickinson, Anna, Newell, Alan F., Smith, Michael J. and Hill, Robin L. (2005): Introducing the Internet to the over-60s: Developing an email system for older novice computer users. In Interacting with Computers, 17 (6) pp. 621-642.

Contemporary technology offers many benefits to older people, but these are often rendered inaccessible through poor software design. As the Internet increasingly becomes a source of information and services it is vital to ensure that older people can access these resources. As part of project funded by the UK government, a multi-disciplinary team set out to develop usable software that would help to introduce older people to the Internet. The first step was to develop an email system for older people with no experience of Internet use. The project was intended to show that it is possible to design usable technology for this group and to explore some of the issues involved in doing so. Design and technical challenges necessitated various tradeoffs. The system produced demonstrated the success of the design decisions: it was significantly easier to use than, and preferred to, a commercial equivalent by a group of older people with no experience of Internet use.

Bayeh, Antoinette Derjani and Smith, Michael J. (1999): Effect of Physical Ergonomics on VDT Workers' Health: A Longitudinal Intervention Field Study in a Service Organization. In International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 11 (2) pp. 109-135.

This article examines the effect of physical ergonomic work conditions on occupational health in video display terminal (VDT)-intensive work settings. A longitudinal intervention field study was conducted in a catalog retail service organization in the Midwest to explore the impact of ergonomic interventions. There were 3 levels of ergonomic interventions, each adding incrementally to the previous one. The 1st level was ergonomic training for all VDT users accompanied by workstation ergonomic analysis leading to specific customized adjustments (Group C). The 2nd level added specific workstation accessories supplied by Details, Inc. if the analysis indicated a need for them (Group B). The 3rd level added a Steelcase Criterion(tm) 453 Series chair (Group A). Health data were gathered from 80 volunteer participants by administering a survey before (baseline), 6 months after, and 12 months after interventions were put in place. The findings show that neck, back, and shoulders as well as wrists stand out in terms of self-reported musculoskeletal pain in VDT-intensive work. Reductions in self-reported musculoskeletal discomfort were found for all 3 levels of incremental ergonomic interventions. The number of cases showing improvement in health over time was significant for intervention Groups A and B, but not C.

Cohen, William J., James, Craig A., Taveira, Alvaro D., Karsh, Ben-Tzion, Scholz, Julie and Smith, Michael J. (1995): Analysis and Design Recommendations for Workstations: A Case Study in an Insurance Company. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 39th Annual Meeting 1995. pp. 412-416.

A case study approach was used to determine the effects of task demands, customer needs, and organizational environment on the recommendations for ergonomic redesign in a large pension and insurance organization. The organization was planning a major renovation of workstations and requested assistance with design and implementation. Three job positions were studied using semi-structured interviews, job observations, and measurements of workstations and the office environment. It was found that most work surfaces and chairs were inadequate for VDT tasks, reception counters presented problems for both the employees and claimants, and the use of shared VDTs on a swivel base resulted in eyestrain and poor postures. In addition, there was inadequate storage space and poor housekeeping for all three jobs, as well as lighting and noise problems throughout the office environment. Recommendations were made for new workstations, with pilot testing to be conducted before full-scale implementation. Although existing workstations were inadequate, it was found that task demands were of greatest concern to the employees.

This paper discusses empirical evidence regarding the effect of electronic performance monitoring on job design and stress. Data from two studies show that electronic performance monitoring seems to have an indirect effect on worker stress via job design. Monitored employees report more negative perceptions of their working conditions and, in one of the two studies, more stress than non-monitored employees. Specific characteristics of electronic performance monitoring, such as completeness and comparison of ratings among co-workers, are related to job design and worker stress.

The effects of frequency of computer problems and computer use intensity on task characteristics and worker stress were examined in a sample of two-hundred-sixty-two office workers from three organizations. Results showed that computer system performance (defined as frequency of computer problems and computer use intensity) had indirect effects on worker stress through its influence on task characteristics. High frequency of computer problems and computer use intensity were related to high workload and work pressure, and low job control which, in turn, were associated with high worker stress.

Sainfort, Pascale C. and Smith, Michael J. (1989): Job Factors as Predictors of Stress Outcomes among VDT Users. In: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1989. pp. 233-240.

A model that defines job control as the crucial determinant of stress outcomes through which other job elements (i.e. job content, job demands and career/future concerns) influence the stress outcomes was tested among a population of VDT users in a governmental organization. It was found that job control was not a critical predictor of the stress outcomes, and that career/future concerns was consistently related to the stress outcomes.

This study proposed a model to examine the links between both objective and subjective measures of chair ergonomics, self-report of back pain, and psychological stress outcomes. We assumed that there would be both direct and indirect effects of ergonomics on stress. The model was tested with 125 office workers who used VDTs for varying amounts of time. All subjects completed questionnaires and had ergonomic evaluations performed on their workstations by trained researchers. The results showed that subjective ergonomics had both a direct and indirect effect on stress while objective ergonomics had only an indirect effect on stress (through subjective ergonomics). A new model was proposed.

Smith, Michael J. (1987): Mental and Physical Strain at VDT Workstations. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 6 (3) pp. 243-255.

There are millions of workers worldwide who use video display terminals (VDTs) on a daily basis. Over the past decade VDT users have reported a variety of health complaints that have been associated with VDTs including visual and musculoskeletal discomfort and psychological distress. In addition VDT users have expressed fears about radiation from VDTs and more recently concerns about adverse reproductive effects. This paper explores the potential health effects of working at a VDT based on an evaluation of current research literature and indicates where more research is underway or needed to better define health risks. Some conclusions about the seriousness of potential health effects are presented.
