Maguire, Martin (2001): Context of Use within usability activities. In International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 55 (4) pp. 453-483.

Designing for usability involves establishing user requirements for a new system or product, developing design solutions, prototyping the system and the user interface, and testing it with representative users. However, before any usability design or evaluation activity can begin, it is necessary to understand the Context of Use for the product, i.e. the goals of the user community, and the main user, task and environmental characteristics of the situation in which it will be operated. This paper describes the background to, and importance of, understanding Context of Use, and presents a process for performing a context analysis. The method described is particularly aimed at non-experts in the area of user-centred design and evaluation.

Maguire, Martin (2001): Methods to support human-centred design. In International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 55 (4) pp. 587-634.

This paper notes the importance of usable systems and promotes the process of human-centred design as a way to achieve them. Adopting the framework of ISO 13407, each of the main processes in the human-centred design cycle is considered in turn along with a set of usability methods to support it. These methods are briefly described with references to further information. Each set of methods is also presented in a table format to enable the reader to compare and select them for different design situations.

Dillon, Andrew, Sweeney, Marian and Maguire, Martin (1993): A Survey of Usability Engineering Within the European IT Industry -- Current Practice and Needs. In: Alty, James L., Diaper, Dan and Guest, D. (eds.) Proceedings of the Eighth Conference of the British Computer Society Human Computer Interaction Specialist Group - People and Computers VIII August 7-10, 1993, Loughborough University, UK. pp. 81-94.

The present paper reports on a survey of current practices in usability engineering and requirements for support within European IT organisations. Responses were obtained from 84 individuals working in nine European countries. The data were analysed in terms of four themes; respondents' background, their interpretation and appreciation of the concept of usability, current practice with regard to usability evaluation, problems and requirements for support in conducting usability evaluation. Results suggest widespread awareness but only superficial application of Human Factors methods in Industry.

Maguire, Martin (1982): Computer Recognition of Textual Keyboard Inputs from Naive Users. In Behaviour and Information Technology, 1 (1) pp. 93-111.

The case for interactive computer dialogues for naive users to be based upon textual keyboard inputs is supported. A number of problems associated with this approach are highlighted relating to the fact that a single input may be entered in a variety of ways. A computer procedure, called TEX, is proposed which is designed to tolerate this variance and to successfully recognize textual inputs.

Maguire, Martin (1982): An Evaluation of Published Recommendations on the Design of Man-Computer Dialogues. In International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 16 (3) pp. 237-261.

It is recognized that the design of an effective man-computer dialogue is crucial to the success of an interactive system. A review of the literature on the subject identifies a number of important aspects of dialogue design upon which much sound advice is given. However, there is a tendency for recommendations based upon a limited field of experience to be offered as more general advice causing apparent conflicts between suggestions emanating from different sources. Such conflicts can frequently be resolved by regarding each suggestion as an alternative strategy to be applied in a particular situation. It is concluded then that the definition of a framework for the classification of dialogue design recommendations would simplify the designer's task of retrieving those most relevant to his needs.
