Tang, John C., Drews, Clemens, Smith, Mark, Wu, Fei, Sue, Alison and Lau, Tessa (2007): Exploring patterns of social commonality among file directories at work. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2007 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2007. pp. 951-960. Available online

We studied files stored by members of a work organization for patterns of social commonality. Discovering identical or similar documents, applications, developer libraries, or other files may suggest shared interests or experience among users. Examining actual file data revealed a number of individual and aggregate practices around file storage. For example, pairs of users typically have many (over 13,000) files in common. A prototype called LiveWire exploits this commonality to make file backup and restore more efficient for a work organization. We removed commonly shared files and focused on specific filetypes that represent user activity to find more meaningful files in common. The Consolidarity project explores how patterns of file commonality could encourage social networking in an organizational context. Mechanisms for addressing the privacy concerns raised by this approach are discussed.

Slayden, April, Spasojevic, Mirjana, Hans, Mat and Smith, Mark (2005): The DJammer: "air-scratching" and freeing the DJ to join the party. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2005 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2005. pp. 1789-1792. Available online

Traditional Disc Jockeys use vinyl records and turntables to manipulate music in real time. We describe the development of the DJammer, a new device that enables its users to manipulate digital music using a portable handheld sensor. In addition to the standard actions offered by most portable digital music players, the DJammer provides its users with control capabilities previously offered only through the use of turntables. Using the DJammer, DJs can "air-scratch" digital music via simple hand motions similar to those used when scratching vinyl records, fade the music, and jump to a predefined position within the song using a wireless sensor designed to fit in the DJ's hand. The preliminary study of the device by experienced DJs suggests that it can play a role as an accessory to their professional equipment, freeing them to step away from their consoles during the performance and uncovering opportunities for creativity and personalization.

Topol, Susan, Smith, Mark and Schluederberg, Suzanne (1995): Where Campus Meets the Internet: A Universally Accessible Online Documentation System. In: ACM 13th International Conference on Systems Documentation 1995. pp. 181-188. Available online

With paper distribution of documents exceeding one million copies in a single year and better access to network connectivity and software tools across campus, the time had come to improve the online documentation offerings for University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students. The new online system needed to fit into our distributed campus computing environment, and had to be easy to maintain and update. It had to use tools and workstation platforms that our users already had and were familiar with, so that no steep learning curve or new equipment purchases were required in order to use the system. And, it had to operate over both high-speed network connections and slower-speed dial-in connections.

More and more we're being asked to live with technology that is technically reliable, because it was created to fit our knowledge of the physical world, but that is so complex or so counterintuitive that it's actually unusable by most human beings.
