Shahid, Suleman, Krahmer, Emiel, Swerts, Marc, Melder, Willem A. and Neerincx, Mark A. (2009): Exploring social and temporal dimensions of emotion induction using an adaptive affective mirror. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2009 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2009. pp. 3727-3732. Available online

This paper investigates if and how a digital, interactive affective mirror induces positive emotions in participants. We study whether the induced affect is repeatable after a fixed interval (Study 1) and how the social presence affects the emotion induction (Study 2). Results show that participants systematically feel more positive after an affective mirror session; this effect is shown to be repeatable, and co-presence of a friend is shown to boost this effect.

Melder, Willem A., Truong, Khiet P., Uyl, Marten Den, Leeuwen, David A. van, Neerincx, Mark A., Loos, Lodewijk R. and Plum, B. Stock (2007): Affective multimodal mirror: sensing and eliciting laughter. In: Proceedings of the 2007 ACM International Workshop on Human-Centered Multimedia 2007. pp. 31-40. Available online

In this paper, we present a multimodal affective mirror that senses and elicits laughter. Currently, the mirror contains a vocal and a facial affect-sensing module, a component that fuses the output of these two modules to achieve a user-state assessment, a user state transition model, and a component to present audiovisual affective feedback that should keep or bring the user in the intended state. Interaction with this intelligent interface involves a full cyclic process of sensing, interpreting, reacting, sensing (of the reaction effects), interpreting. The intention of the mirror is to evoke positive emotions, to make people laugh and to increase the laughter. The first user experiences tests showed that users show cooperative behavior, resulting in mutual user-mirror action-reaction cycles. Most users enjoyed the interaction with the mirror and immersed in an excellent user experience.

Cremers, Anita H. M. and Neerincx, Mark A. (2004): Personalisation Meets Accessibility: Towards the Design of Individual User Interfaces for All. In: Proceedings of the 8th ERCIM Workshop on User Interfaces for All 2004. p. 119. Available online

Current accessibility guidelines are composed to allow users with special needs to more easily and comfortably access the Internet. However, most of the guidelines are written with both a standard device and a standard use context in mind, which is the user sitting in front of a desktop computer, in a non-mobile situation at home or at work. This approach does not take into account the likely possibility that an individual who happens to have a certain limitation may also have other personal needs, a certain type of behaviour or activities that require a specific type of support. In this position paper, we plead for a more fundamental approach of dealing with Internet accessibility for people with special needs. We claim that a person with a special need does not differ from a regular individual, in the sense that they are both users who are trying to accomplish a certain task in a certain use context using a certain device, who may have their own personal requirements for support. One could state that in this way accessibility and personalisation are intertwined to result in an optimal, individual user experience, thereby making optimal use of technologies that are currently available ((dedicated) devices, user interface technologies and assistive technologies).

I'm an enemy of what I call 'computer theology.' There's a class conflict out there. There's a techno-elite that lives in a different world.
