Kincaid, J. P., Thomas, Margaret, Arnold, David and Lindeis, Ann-Elise (1991): Use of Voice Technology for Language Training. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 35th Annual Meeting 1991. pp. 1385-1389.

This paper describes the Language Technology Project at the University of Central Florida. The Goal of this project is to develop, evaluate, and commercially produce language courseware and training techniques for personal computers (PCs), including IBM and Macintosh, equipped with voice interfaces. The primary emphasis of the Language Technology Projects has been in the development of demonstration courseware. The second area is the evaluation of courseware, including research regarding effective computerized instructional strategies. Informal field-testing of one package in an Orange Country (Florida) elementary school suggests that the style of instruction is readily compatible with students as young as the first garde. Several studies have also provided insight into instruction design.

Thomas, Margaret, Gilson, Richard, Ziulkowski, Sharon and Gibbons, Stephen (1989): Short-Term Memory Demands in Processing Synthetic Speech. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 33rd Annual Meeting 1989. pp. 239-241.

The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate the demands placed on the short term memory system by synthetic speech. We compared performance in a typical auditory short term memory task as a function of whether the items were presented by a human voice or by a text-to-speech computer voice generator. Immediate serial recall of digit strings was significantly poorer when presented by synthetic speech than when presented by natural speech. The results are consistent with the idea that comprehension of synthetic speech imposes increased resource demands on the short term memory system.

Kniffin, J. Douglas, Kincaid, J. Peter, Lang, Sheau and Thomas, Margaret (1989): Computer Aids for Authoring Technical Text Written in Controlled English. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 33rd Annual Meeting 1989. pp. 1134-1138.

This paper describes the development and validation of software to automate the authoring of training materials written in controlled English, such as Simplified English (SE). In SE, writers must adhere to many writing rules. While such materials are easy to read, they are very difficult to write. For example, use of short names for equipment must be consistent; also use of synonyms is not allowed. The software provides feedback regarding adherence to stipulated vocabulary and writing rules. Algorithms contained in the software include sentence parsing routines to verify that words are used according to their defined part of speech.
