Dr. Luigina Ciolfi is lecturer and course director of the Digital Media Design programme in the Dept. of Computer Science and Information Systems, and researcher at the Interaction Design Centre at the University of Limerick, Ireland. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Limerick and a Laurea in Communication Sciences (summa cum laude), from the University of Siena (Italy), specialising in Human-Machine Interaction.

Luigina's research is concerned with the design of technologies to support human interaction within the physical space, based on an understanding of the relationship between people, activities and their locales. During the past number of years, she has developed a conceptual framework for place-centred design, incorporating socio-scientific sensitivities for understanding the human experience of space and place into Interaction Design practice. She has participated in a number of national and international research projects on this topic, including “SHAPE-Situating Hybrid Assemblies in Public Environments”, “HIPS - Hyper Interaction Within Physical Space”, "Shared Worlds" and "NomadS". She is currently co-leading a PRTLI-funded project on the topic of "Nomadic Work/Lives in the Knowledge Economy", in collaboration with the Dept. of Sociology at UL. She has published extensively in the areas of human-computer interaction and interaction design, as well as having organised a number of international workshops on the topic of museum technologies, ubiquitous computing and mobile work. She is also co-editor of a recently published special issue of the Computer-Supported Cooperative Work Journal on "Settings fro Collaboration: the Role of Place". Luigina is Associate Editor and Book Review Editor for the Computer-Supported Cooperative Work Journal, and serves on the programme committee of several international conferences. She is a member of ACM SIGCHI, the British HCI Group and ADI-the Italian PhDs Association.

Re-Tracing the Past: exploring objects, stories, mysteries, was an exhibition held at the Hunt Museum, in Limerick, Ireland from 9th-19th June 2003. We attempted to create an exhibition that would be an engaging experience for visitors, that would open avenues for exploration, allow for the collection of visitor opinions, and that would add to the understanding of material already in the Museum, rather than focus on "gee-whiz" technology. Thus our augmented environment completely hid the technology from view. A key objective was to be faithful to the ethos of the Museum, and to produce an exhibition that would stand up to scrutiny by Museum professionals. This design study paper gives a flavour of the exhibition by taking the reader on a tour of the whole design and development cycle-through site pictures, drawings, scenarios, pictures of the exhibition spaces, the interactive components, and visitor comments.
