Knowledge is commonly socially constructed, through collaborative efforts towards shared objectives or by dialogues and challenges brought about by different persons' perspectives.

Normore, Lorraine F. (1991): The Interface Specialist: Contrasting Opinions on Role Content. In ACM SIGCHI Bulletin, 23 (1) pp. 30-32.

Through involvement in on-going development projects, we investigated issues brought about by having interface specialists rather than generally trained system development staff designing and developing interfaces. This article reports on some of the issues raised, discusses the activities associated with this project and points out differences in the perceptions of the tasks seen as relevant to this role by a human factors professional and by systems development staff.

Smith, Philip J., Normore, Lorraine F. and Denning, Rebecca (1991): Knowledge Acquisition Techniques: A Case Study in the Design of a Reference Materials Access Tool. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 35th Annual Meeting 1991. pp. 273-277.

It is popular to talk about using a problem-driven approach to guide the design of computer-based tools. It is not always so easy, however, to determine just what the significant problems are within some existing work environment. A thorough cognitive task analysis can provide valuable guidance in understanding the nature of existing problems and in designing solutions. In this paper, the use of multiple sources of data are explored in completing such a task analysis in order to design tools to support individuals preparing input for a full-text database.
