Fast, Lisa (1993): Incorporation of User Models in Enhanced Voice Services Design. In: Egger, Wilhelm (ed.) Proceedings of the 14th International Symposium HFT on Human Factors in Telecommunication 1993, Darmstadt, Germany. .

Many user interface designs of voice-based network services are based on the concept that all of the users will correctly follow the instructions. In this study of a new network service, Usability Testing demonstrated that an existing mental model can strongly influence user behaviour, despite instructive announcements. An alternative design was proposed which incorporated the existing model and provided an information option for novice users to establish a more efficient conceptual model of the new service.

Most digital products today emerge from the development process like a monster emerging from a bubbling tank. Developers, instead of planning and executing with their users in mind, end up creating technological solutions over which they ultimately have little control. Like mad scientists, they fail because they have not imbued their creations with humanity.

-- Alan Cooper, About Face 2.0, p. 5.
