Klaus Miesenberger

Klaus Miesenberger is vice head of Institute Integriert Studieren at the University of Linz, Austria. He has a background computer science and economics. He is responsible for R&D and teaching at the institute which also runs a service centre for students with disabilities. In 2000 he was guest professor at the Université Claude Bernard, Lyon II. He gives lectures at different Austrian universities and teacher training academies. His research and teaching is related to Assistive Technologies, eAccessibility and Design for All. He has been involved in more than 60 national and international R&D projects in these fields. He:

  • chairs the working group “Computer Science with/for People with Special Needs” of the Austrian Computer Society.
  • acts as the organising and publishing chair of ICCHP (International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs
  • is member of the scientific and professional societies IFIP, working group 13.3 (HCI and People with Special Needs), OCG, AAATE and FEDORA
  • is member of the board of ALS (Arbeitsgemeinschaft zur Lehr- und Lernmittelerstellung für Sehgeschädigte), responsible for access to school books for school children in electronic form, co-operation with authors and publishers and general management
  • is the founder and the chair of the international association “International Computer Camps”, organising annual computer training events for young blind and visually handicapped students. More than 1000 blind and visually handicapped students from more than 30 countries took part in these events since 1993.
  • is co-founder of the association UNIABILITY, the organisation of professional counsellors for students with disabilities or chronic diseases at universities in Austria.
  • acts as the managing director of National Contact Point for EDeAN (European Design for All e-Accessibility Network)
  • is the scientific co-ordinator for two University distance learning courses, both four semesters: “Barrier Free Web Design” and “Assistive Technologies”
  • set up and chairs the Regional Competence Centre IT for People with disabilities (KI-I) for the Regional Government Upper Austria
  • is President of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe (AAATE)

In this paper we describe a software model that we have developed within the framework of the MaWEn project (Mathematical Working Environment). Based on the MathML standard, this model enables collaboration between sighted people and users of Braille. It allows for synchronisation of Braille and graphical views of scientific contents as well as offering improved navigational functions for Braille users, in both reading and editing modes. The UMCL (Universal Maths Conversion Library) is used to support various national Braille Mathematical notations. After presenting the model, its implementation in MaWEn prototypes is described.

This paper addresses the modeling of user-centred interaction paradigms at a fundamental level. Interfacing can be described as defining and specifying connection points for communication. By providing interactive means of relating flows between these connection points, we can achieve a dialogue. A dialogue becomes a Dialog if a sufficient level of understanding both ways is achieved. We consider this to represent the level of accessibility an environment, whether virtual or real, requires. A well balanced design in any information system provides an architecture with built-in accessibility features. To this end, a high level of flexibility and accessibility can be achieved by separating the various entities that are of importance in the communication process. This paper provides an explanation of this approach and an example of its implementation.

We describe the UMA system, a system developed under a multi-institution collaboration for making mathematics universally accessible. The UMA system includes translators that freely inter-convert mathematical documents transcribed in formats used by unsighted individual (Nemeth, Marburg) to those used by sighted individuals (LaTeX, Math-ML, OpenMath) and vice versa. The UMA system also includes notation-independent tools for aural navigation of mathematics. In this paper, we give an overview of the UMA system and the techniques used for realizing it.

... in an information-rich world, the wealth of information means a dearth of something else: a scarcity of whatever it is that information consumes. What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention, and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it.
