Schmidt, Kjeld, Wagner, Ina and Tolar, Marianne (2007): Permutations of cooperative work practices: a study of two oncology clinics. In: GROUP07: International Conference on Supporting Group Work 2007. pp. 1-10. Available online
Based on a comparative study of cooperative work practices at two oncology clinics, the paper shows that work practices across these otherwise comparable settings vary significantly. Asking, how can ethnographic studies of local work practices then provide a dependable basis for design, the paper discusses how we may conceive of the relationship between ethnographic studies and systems development and suggests that a way out of the dilemma might be found in developing an analysis of the 'higher-order' practices of endless combination and recombination of artifacts, formats, notations, etc. that are found across such sites.

Brahe, Steen and Schmidt, Kjeld (2007): The story of a working workflow management system. In: GROUP07: International Conference on Supporting Group Work 2007. pp. 249-258. Available online
This work presents experiences with the adopting of a workflow management system in a large financial institution. We describe the gradual evolution of a traditional work process, from manual to computational regulation of coordination. The study shows that computational workflows may increase labor productivity remarkably and in general have significant economic benefits, but also that to make current workflow technologies yield such results requires unorthodox twists and tweaks in the workflow design to allow for worker control and process overview. The paper argues that workflow technology is now at a stage where the contribution of CSCW is obviously needed.

Schmidt, Kjeld and Wagner, Ina (2004): Ordering Systems: Coordinative Practices and Artifacts in Architectural Design and Planning. In Computer Supported Cooperative Work, 13 (5) pp. 349-408
In their cooperative effort, architects depend critically on elaborate coordinative practices and artifacts. The article presents, on the basis of an in-depth study of architectural work, an analysis of these practices and artifacts and shows that they are multilaterally interrelated and form complexes of interrelated practices and artifacts which we have dubbed ordering systems. In doing so, the article outlines an approach to investigating and conceiving of such practices.

In: Proceedings of the International ACM SIGGROUP Conference on Supporting Group Work 1999 November 14-17, 1999, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. pp. 111-120. Available online
Many manufacturing enterprises are now trying to introduce various forms of flexible work organizations on the shop floor. However, existing computer-based production planning and control systems pose severe obstacles for autonomous working groups and other kinds of shop floor control to become reality. The research reported in this paper is predicated on the belief that the CSCW approach could offer a strategy for dealing with this problem. The paper describes the field work and its constructive outcome: a system that assists shop-floor teams in dealing with the complexities of day-to-day production planning by supporting intelligent and responsible workers in their situated coordination activities on the shop floor.

Proceedings of the International ACM SIGGROUP Conference on Supporting Group Work 1997 November 11-19, 1997, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. pp. 138-147. Available online
The received understanding of the status of formal organizational constructs in cooperative work is problematic. The paper shows that the empirical evidence is not as strong as we may have believed and that there is evidence from other studies that contradicts what we may have taken for granted for years. This indicates that the role of formal constructs is more differentiated than generally taken for granted. They not only serve as 'maps' but also as 'scripts'.

Schmidt, Kjeld and Simone, Carla (1996): Coordination Mechanisms: Towards a Conceptual Foundation of CSCW Systems Design. In Computer Supported Cooperative Work, 5 (2) pp. 155-200
The paper outlines an approach to CSCW systems design based on the concept of 'coordination mechanisms.' The concept of coordination mechanisms has been developed as a generalization of phenomena described in empirical investigations of the use of artifacts for the purpose of coordinating cooperative activities in different work domains. On the basis of the evidence of this corpus of empirical studies, the paper outlines a theory of the use of artifacts for coordination purposes in cooperative work settings, derives a set of general requirements for computational coordination mechanisms, and sketches the architecture of Ariadne, a CSCW infrastructure for constructing and running such malleable and linkable computational coordination mechanisms.

This paper examines the relationship between cooperative work and the wider organizational context. The purpose of the exploration is not to contribute to organizational theory in general, but to critique the transaction cost approach to organizational theory from the point of view of cooperative work. The paper posits that the formal conception of organization -- organization conceived of in terms of "common ownership" -- is inadequate as a conceptual foundation for embedding CSCW systems in a wider organizational context. The design of CSCW systems for real-world application must move beyond the bounds of organizational forms conceived of in terms of "common ownership."

Carstensen, Peter H. and Schmidt, Kjeld (1993): Work Analysis -- Perspectives on and Requirements for a Methodology. In: Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1993. pp. 575-580.
Today computers are used as support tools in work domains with a high degree of complexity. Because of the increased complexity and the high amount of relevant aspects and perspectives of the work, the traditional computer science analysis methodologies for analyzing and describing the work often fail modeling the relevant aspects. It is argued, that an analysis methodology that grasps all relevant aspects of the work domain is heavily required. Existing methodologies are insufficient and only fragments of a framework for work analysis exist. A framework or a methodology must be based on a theory of work rather than a theory of computer based systems to avoid automation of non-automatable practice and to support users in managing unforeseen contingencies. Central characteristics of complex work domains and problems in existing methodologies are discussed. Using this as a basis, a number of requirements for work analysis methodologies are identified.

The title of this paper was chosen to highlight the fact that the label CSCW, although widely adopted as the acronym for the field of Computer Supported Cooperative Work, has been applied to computer applications of very different ilk. It is not at all clear what are the unique identifying elements of this research area. This paper provides a framework for approaching the issue of cooperative work and its possible computer support. The core issues are identified and prospects for the field are outlined.
