I graduated in Computer Science, and Psychology as minor subject, at the University of Paderborn. In 2002 I started working as Usability Engineer at the Cooperative Computing & Communication Laboratory (C-LAB) Paderborn, which is a joint research and development laboratory operated by Siemens IT Solutions & Services GmbH (until 1st July 2011; than: ATOS Origin) & and the University of Paderborn. Meanwhile I worked as Consultant within several projects and supported the integration of User Centered Design (UCD) activities into the product development lifecycle of the organizations. I was the group leader of Interactive Dialog Systems at C-LAB until August 2011. Since 15th August I am a professor at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. My current research interests are widespread such as UCD & usability engineering and its combination with software engineering methodologies (i.e. agile development), mixed reality applications, context-aware information systems, in-car information systems, mobile navigation systems, tangible- and multi-touch interaction etc. Following the topic of my doctoral thesis (Integration von Usability Engineering und Software Engineering:Konformitts- und Rahmenanforderungen zur Bewertung und Definition von Softwareentwicklungsprozesse" / "Integrating Usability Engineering and Software Engineering: Compliancy and key requirements for the assessment and definition of software development processes") I still work on the integration of UCD activities and software engineering processes.

This work presents an approach to overcome the disadvantages of existing interaction frameworks and technologies for touch detection and object interaction. The robust and easy to use framework dSensingNI (Depth Sensing Natural Interaction) is described, which supports multitouch and tangible interaction with arbitrary objects. It uses images from a depth-sensing camera and provides tracking of users fingers of palm of hands and combines this with object interaction, such as grasping, grouping and stacking, which can be used for advanced interaction techniques.

The access to current and reliable maps and data is a critical factor in the management of disaster situations. Standard user interfaces are not well suited to provide this information to crisis managers. Especially in dynamic situations conventional cartographic displays and mouse based interaction techniques fail to address the need to review a situation rapidly and act on it as a team. The development of novel interaction techniques like multi-touch and tangible interaction in combination with large displays provides a promising base technology to provide crisis managers with an adequate overview of the situation and to share relevant information with other stakeholders in a collaborative setting. However, design expertise on the use of such techniques in interfaces for real-world applications is still very sparse. We are, therefore, conducting interdisciplinary research with a user and application centric focus to establish real-world requirements, to design new multi-modal mapping interfaces, and to validate them in disaster management applications. Initial results show that tangible and pen-based interaction are well suited to provide an intuitive and visible way to control who is changing data in a multi-user command and control interface.

Die Integration von Software Engineering und Usability Engineering hat zum Ziel die Prinzipien und Methodologien beider Disziplinen so miteinander zu vereinen, dass ein systematisches, kalkulierbares und planbares Vorgehen zur Erstellung gebrauchstauglicher Produkte entsteht. In der Arbeit werden entsprechende Integrations- und Anknpfungsbereiche beider Disziplinen identifiziert und Manahmen erarbeitet, die eine solche Herangehensweise ermglichen und dabei die Sichtweisen beider Disziplinen in gleichem Mae bercksichtigen. Im Kern der Arbeit stehen so genannte Konformitts- und Rahmenanforderungen, welche auf Standards und Expertenwissen basieren und grundlegende Belange aus Sicht des Usability Engineering formulieren. Sie dienen einer effizienten und effektiven Bewertung von Softwareentwicklungsprozessen bezglich deren Fhigkeit zur Erstellung gebrauchstauglicher Produkte. Darber hinaus knnen die Anforderungen auf der Abstraktionsebene von Vorgehensmodellen des Software Engineering angewendet werden. Ziel ist es hierbei, etablierte Modelle des Software Engineering dahingehend zu ergnzen, dass die darin definierten Vorgehensweisen fr die Entwicklung bereits Manahmen implizieren, die zur Erstellung gebrauchstauglicher Produkte notwendig sind.

Today's cars offer more than just driving experience. Their embedded in-car information systems provide users with a wide range of additional (entertaining) functionalities such as radio, CD, DVD and TV, navigation, access to their mobile phone or to their portable mp3-player, and even to the internet. Thus, as it is an integrated part of the car, the users' interaction with these systems has become an important part of the overall driving experience and its joy of use. The interaction is situated in a highly dynamic environment with specific cognitive demands to the driver. Additionally, there is a dynamically changing context that can influence the quality of interaction, e.g. with regard to the usability. Systems with user interfaces that adapt to this context are potentially capable to offer a suitable quality of interaction by addressing the driver's needs and goals in varying driving situations. However, adaptations of the user interface also hold threats to the quality of interaction. In a user study, this work explores the users' reaction towards a context-adaptive user interface of an in-car navigation system according to information display and interaction mechanism.

Mixed reality -- the close coupling of real world objects with computer generated information and functionality -- has high potential for the creation of usable user interfaces. The implementation of practical applications that exploit these benefits requires an exploratory design approach to handle the interaction of application content with newly developed interaction techniques and complex hardware. In this paper we describe how agile methods from software engineering can be integrated with usability engineering and mixed reality development techniques to enable effective design space exploration. The approach was employed in the development of the Augmented Paper Map (APM) project in which conventional paper maps are enhanced with mixed reality functionality. Experiences with the method and future enhancements and modifications of the approach are discussed.
