Hammond, Judith H. (1993): Standards for Usability: Towards Usable Interfaces. In: Proceedings of OZCHI93, the CHISIG Annual Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1993. pp. 85-93.

Many organisations use standards to provide a framework for good practice in the design process and a consistent approach to systems development. Standards support the integration of usability into systems design and ensure more usable interfaces. Many organisations develop their own in-house standards. National and international standards may also be adopted, when available. Recent developments in drafting international standards involving usability aspects of IT design activities will have major effects for organisations wanting to achieve high levels of usability in their interface design. This paper describes some aspects of what is currently under discussion in ISO committees given the task of creating new usability standards. It draws conclusions about the relevance of emerging ISO usability standards for Australian developers, and the possible role of Australian HCI professionals in influencing the drawing process.

Hammond, Judith H. (1992): Developing Guidelines and Standards for Usability. In: Proceedings of OZCHI92, the CHISIG Annual Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1992. p. 191.

There is considerable debate amongst practitioners about rules, guidelines and standards relating to usability. Many organisations would like to be able to provide guidance for their systems developers and designers about how to ensure usability is incorporated into their systems development life cycle, but are unsure how this might be done. This paper discusses rules, guidelines and standards for usability in general terms, their importance, their usefulness and their pitfalls. The paper discusses a process for developing guidelines, based on practical experience in developing usability guidelines within the framework of a large organisation.

McManus, Brendan and Hammond, Judith H. (1991): How to Make Usability Work in the Real World. In: Proceedings of OZCHI91, the CHISIG Annual Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1991. pp. 97-102.

This paper outlines some of the pitfalls, in terms of organisational change, that may be met when introducing usability as a major contributor to product quality. Issues addressed are: * ownership of product usability, how to prevent the "us and them" syndrome * project team involvement and commitment * senior management backing and awareness * getting and maintaining a user perspective * communication, planning and reporting * planning a usability program, starting from scratch Based on the experiences within Westpac, this paper offers practical advice on how to set up and ensure the success of a usability engineering program in an industrial setting.

Hammond, Judith H. (1991): Planning for HCI Education and Training. In: Proceedings of OZCHI91, the CHISIG Annual Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1991. pp. 133-134.

The last session of the OZCHI91 conference is a panel presentation and discussion about HCI education and training. It follows three papers presented on educational studies and activities and is intended to raise questions and (hopefully) find answers on the subject of what (if anything) needs to be done to ensure that HCI practitioners are well-educated and trained.

Hammond, Judith H. and McManus, Brendan (1991): Integrating Usability Evaluation with Systems Design. In: Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1991. pp. 733-737.

To improve the quality and usability of a finished system or product and eradicate or minimise the impact of usability problems identified during evaluation, requires a total integrated team approach to systems development. How is this to be achieved? This paper examines processes used in a real working environment and provides some solutions to this question. It describes evaluation techniques used by a large corporation in its quest to improve the usability and total quality of its products. Benefits are noted, particularly in terms of the integration of usability evaluation with systems design and its effects on the total product team.

I'm an enemy of what I call 'computer theology.' There's a class conflict out there. There's a techno-elite that lives in a different world.
