It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them.

Kinghorn, Rhonda A. and Bittner, Jr. Alvah C. (1993): Truck Driver Anthropometric Data: Estimating the Current Population. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 37th Annual Meeting 1993. pp. 580-584.

This report shows that a challenge facing designers of commercial trucks and other vehicles is a lack of current operator anthropometric data on which to base design decisions. Specifically, it was points out that current data suffer from a number of limitations including secular size changes, ethnic and gender composition shifts, and excessive standard errors (S.E.) of percentiles estimates. These and other limitations point out the need for estimates of contemporary, professional driver anthropometry. This report presents tabulations of comprehensive male and female driver population anthropometry estimates, and outlines a method for applying these anthropometric data to the design of trucks and other vehicles.

Bittner, Jr. Alvah C. and Bramwell, Allen T. (1992): Subjects in Human Factors: Evaluation of Subject-Condition (SxC) Interactions. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 36th Annual Meeting 1992. pp. 1232-1236.

The opportunities presented by subjects-condition (SxC) interactions are discussed after an introduction to their nature. Operator Strategy Differences (SDs), Scale-of-Measurement Effects (SOMs), and Condition Requirement Differences (CRDs) are each seen as potential sources of SxC interactions. It is shown that SxC interactions can (1) frequently be detected using an analysis of "error" variances approach, (2) be characterized in terms of their nature, and (3) enhance the utility of research results (once characterized). It is recommended that subjects-condition (SxC) interactions be routinely evaluated in human factors research.

Bittner, Jr. Alvah C. (1991): Robust Testing and Evaluation (T&E) of Systems. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 35th Annual Meeting 1991. pp. 1332-1335.

Using "robust" testing and evaluation (T&E) components will ensure system T&E success despite unanticipated resource and schedule shocks. Selected tools for building robust T&E plans, methods, and analysis components are described. These robust tools provide a beginning framework that the practitioner can build upon to achieve successful T&Es.

Deffner, Gerhard, Snyder, Harry L., Bittner, Jr. Alvah C., Fisher, Carolanne, Rhenius, Detlef and Sanderson, Penelope (1990): Verbal Protocols as a Research Tool in Human Factors. In: D., Woods, and E., Roth, (eds.) Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 34th Annual Meeting 1990, Santa Monica, USA. pp. 1145-1147.

Verbal protocols have been used for many years in different research contexts, but there still is no clear consensus about the validity of the technique and methods for maximizing validity in an applied setting; how to standardize the collection and analysis of protocols; and last but certainly not least, whether the resulting data is worth the effort. This panel discussion is a companion to a symposium at this conference which presents empirical studies and human factors applications of verbal protocol techniques. The panel will focus in more depth on issues raised in that earlier session, with the goal of providing guidance for practical applications of the technique.
