José Rouillard is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Lille 1. He obtained his PhD in 2000 from the University of Grenoble (France) in the field of Human-Computer Interfaces. He is interested in HCI plasticity, multi-modality and multi-channel interfaces. He has written more than 60 papers and is now engaged in research on mobility and pervasive/ubiquitous computing.

Ambient computing is one of the more significant recent advances in computer-human interactions. With the ambient intelligence paradigm, computers become embedded in our natural surroundings. As they are context sensitive and adaptable, they better provide smart services to humans. But ambient computing requires communication between several heterogeneous components that are not supposed to communicate each other. This paper describes how we use a workflow to facilitate the design of multichannel interfaces for ambient computing. Our results show that different devices (such as Wiimote, multi-touch screen, telephone, etc.) can be managed in order to activate real things (such as lamp, fan, robot, webcam, etc.). A smart digital home case study illustrates a possible implementation of our approach and shows how it allows redesigning easily some parts of the ambient system just by modifying the workflow.

QR Codes (2D barcodes) are used to encode and
decode data at a rapid rate. Using camera phones to read two dimensional barcodes for various purposes is currently a popular
topic in both research and in practical applications. But until now, the information provided by QR Codes was solely static.
What you see is exactly what was encoded. This paper proposes the notion of contextual QR Codes that merge a public QR Code and private information, in order to provide data related to a particular context. For example, a public tag will be decoded and translated into “Good evening John Smith” or “Bonjour Jean Dupond”, if the system is able to obtain data such as the name of the user, the language used on the machine (English or French for instance) and the moment when the interaction takes place.

We present in this paper the interest of ubiquitous computing for the so called contextualized forums. These forums allow communities of practice exchanging and sharing experiences or situations already lived by using learning documents to classify these exchanges. These forums contain a lot of information which contribute to improve classical training. We study here ubiquitous computing possibilities to use this type of forums in order to improve professional training to business process by helping the user to put into practice his/her acquisition. The developed application is being tested and works principally on smartphones.

In a context of multimodality and abstract interfaces, this paper shows problems related to the dynamicity of interfaces, through a case study. This one is applied to the distance learning field, which is very directed towards the traditional Internet. We show why, today, it is not possible to deploy concrete interfaces, at the same time based on a generic model, and usable on learning management systems respecting SCORM.

Cet ouvrage présente VoiceXML, le langage standard permettant d’accéder à Internet grâce à un navigateur vocal via un téléphone fixe ou portable. L’approche est pragmatique. En partant des bases conceptuelles, et en décrivant chaque élément du langage de manière précise (reconnaissance et synthèse vocale, grammaires de dialogue, balises du langage, etc.), chacune des briques logicielles permettant de réaliser un serveur vocal interactif est présentée.

This paper presents an initial study of multichannel interactions within the framework of the E-Marketing. A analysis and prediction theoretical framework, based on the one hand on concepts resulting from psycholinguistics, and the other hand on information theories, more managerial, is proposed. An initial synthesis in terms of index properties of the channels is given. Lastly, some multichannel scenarios and devices are described in detail.

This article presents a reflexion on new forms of interaction not yet approached by the HCI community. It's the study of the convergences and divergences between the personalization seen under two complementary angles: direct marketing on the one hand, and person/system interfaces on the other hand. The multimodality has been studied since many years, and personalization has been used in marketing for a long time, but seldom, both were studied jointly. A prototype of multimodal user adapted E-commerce site is presented. That opens, according to us, many tracks of research on the personnalization/multimodality intersection.
