Jeon, Jiwoon, Croft, W. Bruce, Lee, Joon Ho and Park, Soyeon (2006): A framework to predict the quality of answers with non-textual features. In: Proceedings of the 29th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 2006. pp. 228-235. Available online

New types of document collections are being developed by various web services. The service providers keep track of non-textual features such as click counts. In this paper, we present a framework to use non-textual features to predict the quality of documents. We also show our quality measure can be successfully incorporated into the language modeling-based retrieval model. We test our approach on a collection of question and answer pairs gathered from a community based question answering service where people ask and answer questions. Experimental results using our quality measure show a significant improvement over our baseline.

Jeon, Jiwoon, Croft, W. Bruce and Lee, Joon Ho (2005): Finding semantically similar questions based on their answers. In: Proceedings of the 28th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 2005. pp. 617-618. Available online

A large number of question and answer pairs can be collected from question and answer boards and FAQ pages on the Web. This paper proposes an automatic method of finding the questions that have the same meaning. The method can detect semantically similar questions that have little word overlap because it calculates question-question similarities by using the corresponding answers as well as the questions. We develop two different similarity measures based on language modeling and compare them with the traditional similarity measures. Experimental results show that semantically similar questions pairs can be effectively found with the proposed similarity measures.

Lee, Joon Ho (1997): Analyses of Multiple Evidence Combination. In: Proceedings of the 20th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1997. pp. 267-276. Available online

It has been known that different representations of a query retrieve different sets of documents. Recent work suggests that significant improvements in retrieval performance can be achieved by combining multiple representations of an information need. However, little effort has been made to understand the reason why combining multiple sources of evidence improves retrieval effectiveness. In this paper we analyze why improvements can be achieved with evidence combination, and investigate how evidence should be combined. We describe a rationale for multiple evidence combination, and propose a combining method whose properties coincide with the rationale. We also investigate the effect of using rank instead of similarity on retrieval effectiveness.

Lee, Joon Ho and Ahn, Jeong Soo (1996): Using n-Grams for Korean Text Retrieval. In: Proceedings of the 19th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1996. pp. 216-224. Available online

There is a difficulty in applying the conventional word-based indexing to Korean. The indexable segment of a word, i.e. stem is often a compound noun, which results in the serious decrease of retrieval effectiveness. The morpheme-based indexing, which decomposes a compound noun into simple nouns, has been developed to overcome the problem of compound nouns. It, however, requires a large dictionary and complex linguistic knowledge. In this paper we propose a new indexing method by combining the word-based indexing and the n-gram indexing. The proposed method alleviates the problem of compound nouns without dictionaries and linguistic knowledge. Experimental results show that the proposed method might be almost as effective as the morpheme-based indexing.

Lee, Joon Ho (1995): Combining Multiple Evidence from Different Properties of Weighting Schemes. In: Proceedings of the Eighteenth Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1995. pp. 180-188. Available online

It has been known that using different representations of either queries or documents, or different retrieval techniques retrieves different sets of documents. Recent work suggests that significant improvements in retrieval performance can be achieved by combining multiple representations or multiple retrieval techniques. In this paper we propose a simple method for retrieving different documents within a single query representation, a single document representation and a single retrieval technique. We classify the types of documents, and describe the properties of weighting schemes. Then, we explain that different properties of weighting schemes may retrieve different types of documents. Experimental results show that significant improvements can be obtained by combining the retrieval results from different properties of weighting schemes.

Lee, Joon Ho (1994): Properties of Extended Boolean Models in Information Retrieval. In: Proceedings of the Seventeenth Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1994. pp. 182-190. Available online

The conventional boolean retrieval system does not provide ranked retrieval output because it cannot compute similarity coefficients between queries and documents. Extended boolean models such as fuzzy set, Waller-Kraft, Paice, P-Norm and Infinite-One have been proposed in the past to support ranking facility for the boolean retrieval system. In this paper, we analyze the behavioural aspects of the previous extended boolean models and address important mathematical properties to affect retrieval effectiveness. We concentrate our description on evaluation formulas for AND and OR operations and query weights. Our analyses show that P-Norm is the most suitable for achieving high retrieval effectiveness.

Lee, Joon Ho, Kim, Won Yong, Kim, Myoung Ho and Lee, Yoon Joon (1993): On the Evaluation of Boolean Operators in the Extended Boolean Retrieval Framework. In: Proceedings of the Sixteenth Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1993. pp. 291-297. Available online

The retrieval models based on the extended boolean retrieval framework, e.g., the fuzzy set model and the extended boolean model have been proposed in the past to provide the conventional boolean retrieval system with the document ranking facility. However, due to undesirable properties of evaluation formulas for the AND and OR operations, the former generates incorrect ranked output in certain cases and the latter suffers from the complexity of computation. There have been a variety of fuzzy operators to replace the evaluation formulas. In this paper we first investigate the behavioral aspects of the fuzzy operators and address important issues to affect retrieval effectiveness. We then define an operator class called positively compensatory operators giving high retrieval effectiveness, and present a pair of positively compensatory operators providing high retrieval efficiency as well as high retrieval effectiveness. All the claims are justified through experiments.

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience.
