“The treatment of patients with head and neck cancers is a demanding medical eld, due to the compact anatomy and complex functionality of the aected region. The planning process comprises issues regarding risk and applicability of intervention, extent of surgical removal, and the choice of appropriate access to the pathology. Required clinical information are obtained from dierent examinations, ranging from external visual and palpatory inspection, over preoperative panendoscopy and biopsy histology to radiological imaging. The surgeon needs to process all available information in mind and virtually compile a mental patient model of the target anatomy. 3D visualizations of tomographic data may improve perception of spatial relationships. However, discussions with clinical practicians reveal that parameterization of advanced visual eects tend to be cumbersome and resulting visualizations are often too complex and not dedicated to specic diagnostic or treatment planning questions. Moreover, they will add valuable alternative views, but cannot replace all the other diagnostic sources. We describe long-term experiences on developing and rening a software for ENT surgery planning and documentation. Regarding 3D visualizations, it turns out to be superior to generate sequences of rather simple 3D views directly supporting specic treatment questions, instead of presenting many anatomic structures simultaneously. Developing software for clinical practice thereby benets from a thorough understanding of the target scenarios and the visual questions" they raise. The second focus is on the seamless integration of the dierent diagnostic modalities, ndings, and therapy decisions into a common electronic document. We report on the actual clinical use of the system and discuss how it ts into the surgical planning workflow.”

“In dieser Arbeit werden vier neuartige Ansätze zur interaktiven Korrektur medizinischer 3D-Segmentierungen vorgestellt. Das Hauptziel besteht dabei darin, einen intuitiven sowie zeitsparenden Korrekturvorgang zu erm¨oglichen. Anstatt die segmentierten Objektkonturen in jeder einzelnen Schicht der tomographischen Datens¨atze voneinander getrennt zu bearbeiten, wird die Korrektur von uns als direkte Manipulation dreidimensionaler polygonaler Oberflächenmodelle interpretiert. Die vorgestellten Verfahren sind inspiriert von aktuellen Arbeiten zur benutzerfreundlichen Polygonmodellierung.”

“Basierend auf unseren bisherigen Erfahrungen möchten wir Empfehlungen für die szenariobasierte Konzeption chirurgischer Trainings- und Planungssysteme geben. Die Spezifikation auf Basis von Szenarien schafft eine gemeinsame Kommunikationsbasis zwischen Entwicklern und Ärzten und ermöglicht die anwendernahe Entwicklung von Software. Dabei entsteht jedoch eine Vielzahl an Dokumenten, Anmerkungen und überarbeiteten Versionen. Wir schlagen deshalb eine konkrete Strategie zur Nutzung von Szenarien vor, die Redundanzen reduziert und eine effiziente Verwaltung der Zusammenhänge der entstehenden Dokumente ermöglicht. Wir nutzen diese Strategie und beschreiben davon ausgehend exemplarisch die szenariobasierte Konzeption eines Systems für das Training des medizinischen Workflows in der Wirbelsäulenchirurgie sowie eines Systems für die Planung halschirurgischer Eingriffe. Die Diskussion der Szenarien hat sich für das Verständnis des klinischen Workflows, das Design der Trainings- und Planungsschritte sowie für die Auswahl einer repräsentativen Menge von Fällen und die Definition der für jeden Fall benötigten relevanten Informationen als hilfreich erwiesen.”
