Utsumi, Akira, Milgram, Paul, Takemura, Haruo and Kishino, Fumio (1994): Investigation of Errors in Perception of Stereoscopically Presented Virtual Object Locations in Real Display Space. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 38th Annual Meeting 1994. pp. 250-254.

This paper describes studies on perception of virtual object locations. It explores the behavior of some factors related to depth perception, especially the effect of inter-pupillary distance (IPD) mismatch and the interplay of image blur and binocular disparity. IPD mismatch (which is caused by errors in estimation of the parameter) results in a certain perceptual error of virtual objects' depth. Blur of images is also a source of error in depth representation. It was found, in some cases, to be a very strong depth cue. The results of a series of experiments conducted on IPD mismatch and image blur are also presented.

Kishino, Fumio, Ohya, Jun, Takemura, Haruo and Terashima, Nobuyoshi (1993): Virtual Space Teleconferencing System -- Real Time Detection and Reproduction of 3-D Human Images. In: Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1993. pp. 669-674.

Real-time reproduction of a 3D human image is realized by the experimental system the authors recently built for the realization of a virtual space teleconferencing, in which participants at different sites can feel as if they are at one site and can cooperatively work. In the teleconferencing system, the 3D model of a participant is constructed by a wire frame model mapped by color texture and is displayed on the 3D screen at the receiving site. Using the experimental system, the optimum number of nodes for real-time reproduction is obtained. Promising results for real-time cooperative work using the experimental system are demonstrated.

Ishibuchi, Koichi, Takemura, Haruo and Kishino, Fumio (1993): Real-Time Multi-Hand Detection for Human-Computer Interaction. In: Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 1993. pp. 1040-1045.

This paper proposes a new multi-hand human-computer interface environment based on real-time hand gesture detection. Our real-time hand gesture detection method uses image processing to allow unspecified individuals to convey their intentions to the computer by using their two hands without experiencing the sensation of wearing gloves. The multi-hand detection method, its implementation, and an evaluation of this multi-hand user interface in a virtual reality application are discussed.

Takemura, Haruo and Kishino, Fumio (1992): Cooperative Work Environment using Virtual Workspace. In: Proceedings of the 1992 ACM conference on Computer-supported cooperative work November 01 - 04, 1992, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. pp. 226-232.

A virtual environment, which is created by computer graphics and an appropriate user interface, can be used in many application fields, such as teleoperation, telecommunication and real time simulation. Furthermore, if this environment could be shared by multiple users, there would be more potential applications. Discussed in this paper is a case study of building a prototype of a cooperative work environment using a virtual environment, where more than two people can solve problems cooperatively, including design strategies and implementing issues. An environment where two operators can directly grasp, move or release stereoscopic computer graphics images by hand is implemented. The system is built by combining head position tracking stereoscopic displays, hand gesture input devices and graphics workstations. Our design goal is to utilize this type of interface for a future teleconferencing system. In order to provide good interactivity for users, we discuss potential bottlenecks and their solutions. The system allows two users to share a virtual environment and to organize 3-D objects cooperatively.
