Benzina, Amal, Toennis, Marcus, Klinker, Gudrun and Ashry, Mohamed (2011): Phone-based motion control in VR: analysis of degrees of freedom. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2011 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2011. pp. 1519-1524.

We introduce a one-handed travel technique for virtual environments (VE), we call Phone-Based Motion Control. The travel technique uses a mobile phone with integrated sensors as a 3D spatial input device. We benefit from the touch capability to change the viewpoint translation in the VE, while the orientation of the viewpoint in the VE is controlled by the built-in sensors. The travel interaction clearly distinguishes between translation (touch based translation control) and rotation (steer based rotation control), putting each set of degrees of freedom to a separate interaction technique. This work examines how many degrees of freedom are needed to perform the travel task as easy as possible. It also investigates different mapping functions between the user's actions and the viewpoint reactions in the VR. For that purpose, four metaphors are developed for the steer based rotation control technique. The results of the user study indicate the trend that 4 DOF metaphors perform best, and that the usage of a mobile roll to control the viewpoint is the desired mapping.

Dippon, Andreas and Klinker, Gudrun (2011): KinectTouch: accuracy test for a very low-cost 2.5D multitouch tracking system. In: Proceedings of the 2011 ACM International Conference on Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces 2011. pp. 49-52.

We present a simple solution for a touch detection system on any display at a very low cost. By using a Microsoft Kinect, we can detect fingers and objects on and above a display. We conducted a user study in order to evaluate the accuracy of this system compared to the accuracy of a capacitive touch monitor. The results show, that the system can't compete with an integrated system yet, but works well enough to be used as a touch detection system for large displays.

Echtler, Florian, Häussler, Maximilian and Klinker, Gudrun (2010): BioTISCH: the interactive molecular biology lab bench. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2010 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2010. pp. 3439-3444.

In a molecular biology lab, scientists often need to execute strictly defined sequences of operations, typically mixing specific amounts of reagents. The exact steps require information from various sources, like manuals, websites and own notes. Direct access to a computer at the bench would be highly desirable but is rarely implemented, as computers do not fit well into a wet lab environment. In this paper, we present BioTISCH, an interactive workbench for molecular biology laboratories. We show a prototypical setup of an interactive table which provides a sterile user interface for access to existing documentation and for common tasks such as unit conversions. The example illustrates that interactive tables blend very well into a modern biological laboratory and could improve access and exchange of information in this environment.

Echtler, Florian, Dippon, Andreas, Tönnis, Marcus and Klinker, Gudrun (2009): Inverted FTIR: easy multitouch sensing for flatscreens. In: Proceedings of the 2009 ACM International Conference on Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces 2009. pp. 29-32.

The increased attention which multitouch interfaces have received in recent years is partly due to the availability of cheap sensing hardware such as FTIR-based screens. However, this method has so far required a bulky projector-camera setup behind the screen. In this paper, we present a new approach to FTIR sensing by "inverting" the setup and placing the camera in front of the screen. This allows the use of unmodified flat screens as display, thereby dramatically shrinking the space required behind the screen and enabling the easy construction of new types of interactive surfaces.

Echtler, Florian, Pototschnig, Thomas and Klinker, Gudrun (2009): An LED-based multitouch sensor for LCD screens. In: Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Tangible and Embedded Interaction 2009. pp. 227-230.

In recent years, a large number of multitouch sensor concepts have been presented. Particularly optical sensors are highly popular due to their versatility. However, especially camera-based systems often require a significant amount of space behind the screen and are not well suited to flatscreen-based setups. While integrated sensors for flatscreens have already been presented, they are mostly complex, expensive or both. To address these problems, a novel type of multitouch sensor is presented which extends a common LCD monitor with multitouch capabilities without significant depth requirements. The sensor consists of a homogeneous matrix of cheap, mass-produced infrared LEDs. The LCD surface remains unmodified, resulting in a pleasant haptic experience for the user.

Echtler, Florian and Klinker, Gudrun (2008): A multitouch software architecture. In: Proceedings of the Fifth Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction 2008. pp. 463-466.

In recent years, a large amount of software for multitouch interfaces with various degrees of similarity has been written. In order to improve interoperability, we aim to identify the common traits of these systems and present a layered software architecture which abstracts these similarities by defining common interfaces between successive layers. This provides developers with a unified view of the various types of multitouch hardware. Moreover, the layered architecture allows easy integration of existing software, as several alternative implementations for each layer can co-exist. Finally, we present our implementation of this architecture, consisting of hardware abstraction, calibration, event interpretation and widget layers.

User interfaces for ubiquitous augmented reality incorporate a wide variety of concepts such as multi-modal, multi-user, multi-device aspects and new input/output devices. In this paper we present a twofold approach that consists of an execution engine for ubiquitous augmented reality user interfaces and a runtime development environment that enables rapid prototyping and live system adaption for such advanced user interfaces.
