... there are no simple 'right' answers for most web design questions (at least not for the important ones). What works is good, integrated design that fills a need--carefully thought out, well executed, and tested.

Villaren, Thomas, Coppin, Gilles and Leal, Angélica (2012): Modeling task transitions to help designing for better situation awareness. In: ACM SIGCHI 2012 Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems 2012. pp. 195-204.

In complex systems such as cockpits or unmanned systems, operators manage a set of tasks with high temporal dynamics. Frequent changes of situation within the same mission can sometimes induce a loss of operators' Situation Awareness. In this paper, we introduce a methodology for design of Human-Computer Interfaces in dynamic systems taking into account the situation elements constituting operators' activity. We follow a user-centered approach; end-users and domain experts are included along the different steps of this model-based design process. The complete methodology is presented here, from initial task&situation modeling, through transition analysis, to the final recommendations on interface design, applied to an illustrative example.

Chauvin, Christine, Coppin, Gilles and Chéné, Héléna (2010): Analysis of the dynamics of common ground: a methodological proposal. In: Proceedings of the 2010 Annual European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics 2010. pp. 209-212.

The elaboration and maintenance of a common ground between team members are crucial aspects for the efficiency and safety of complex systems. A method has been designed to analyze communication between members of a bridge team of a merchant ship, that was recorded during training sessions on a bridge simulator. This method aims to pointing out the positive or negative dynamics of their common ground. It relies on Hoc coding schemes, as well as on the Bales Interaction Process Analysis. Using a transposition of computer science parsing tools, we try to qualify the different levels and the dynamics of the common ground, expressed in terms of left-open requests or average time of closure. This research is in progress. Its main interest is to combine existing coding schemes (coming from cognitive ergonomics and from social psychology) to formalize functional communications and to use computer science tools to point out and qualify the dynamics of a common ground.
