Kawsar, Fahim, Rukzio, Enrico and Kortuem, Gerd (2010): An explorative comparison of magic lens and personal projection for interacting with smart objects. In: Proceedings of 12th Conference on Human-computer interaction with mobile devices and services 2010. pp. 157-160. Available online

One shortcoming of self-describing smart objects augmented with digital resources is the limitation of output modalities due to their long established physical appearances. To overcome this drawback intangible representations e.g., sound, video projection etc. are usually coupled with the tangible representations of smart objects that enable access and interaction with their value added features. In this paper, we explore two mobile interaction techniques that associate such intangible representation to smart objects using a pico projector augmented camera phone. The first technique utilizes a Magic Lens metaphor applying mobile augmented reality (contextual information is overlaid while looking at a smart object through camera) to uncover and interact with smart objects. The second technique, Personal Projection follows similar mechanisms in discovery and interaction, except information is projected onto the nearest surface. We report the implementation of these two techniques and a comparative qualitative study with three prototype smart object applications. The findings give us deeper insights on the positive and negative aspects of these two techniques and open up a range of stimulating research issues that we discuss in the paper.

Schneider, Michael, Kroner, Alexander, Stephan, Peter, Plotz, Thomas, Kawsar, Fahim and Kortuem, Gerd (2010): Digital object memories in the internet of things workshop: (DOME-IoT 2010). In: Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Uniquitous Computing 2010. pp. 527-530. Available online

Everyday objects tagged with sensors and actuators that communicate and cooperate provide the foundation of the Internet of Things. Most applications in the Internet of Things deal with information related to such objects in the one or other way, whilst Digital Object Memories comprise hardware and software components, which together provide an open and universal platform that allows for the continuous capture and conceptual and/or physical association of digital information with physical objects. As such, they support information exchange and reuse across environments and applications, and pave the way for novel kinds of applications and services. The goal of this workshop is to unite these two perspectives on connected objects and object memory in a hybrid workshop format that combines traditional presentations and discussion with a practical experiment.

Location information can be used to enhance interaction with mobile devices. While many location systems require instrumentation of the environment, we present a system that allows devices to measure their spatial relations in a true peer-to-peer fashion. The system is based on custom sensor hardware implemented as USB dongle, and computes spatial relations in real-time. In extension of this system we propose a set of spatialized widgets for incorporation of spatial relations in the user interface. The use of these widgets is illustrated in a number of applications, showing how spatial relations can be employed to support and streamline interaction with mobile devices.

This paper presents a low-cost and practical approach to achieve basic input using a tactile cube-shaped object, augmented with a set of sensors, processor, batteries and wireless communication. The algorithm we propose combines a finite state machine model incorporating prior knowledge about the symmetrical structure of the cube, with maximum likelihood estimation using multivariate Gaussians. The claim that the presented solution is cheap, fast and requires few resources, is demonstrated by implementation in a small-sized, microcontroller-driven hardware configuration with inexpensive sensors. We conclude with a few prototyped applications that aim at characterizing how the familiar and elementary shape of the cube allows it to be used as an interaction device.
