Brogmus, George Erich (1995): Reporting of Cumulative Trauma Disorders of the Upper Extremities May be Leveling Off in the United States. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 39th Annual Meeting 1995. pp. 591-594.

Since the early 1980's reporting of cumulative trauma disorders of the upper extremities (CTDUEs) has been increasing. The past few years have seen increasing attention given to these disorders. More recently, the premise that CTDUEs should be a top priority based on the magnitude of workers' compensation insurance claims and OSHA cases has been challenged. This paper provides data indicating that the reporting of CTDUEs in the U.S. may soon level off and the rate of increase of the number of CTDUEs as a percent of all cases reported in the U.S. has already significantly declined. Data from both the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Liberty Mutual Group workers' compensation claims indicate that even though the number of CTDUEs as a percent of all cases reported has been increasing over the past ten years, the rate of increase has declined steadily since 1991. If this trend continues, CTDUE reporting will level off in 1995. Possible reasons for these trends are briefly discussed.

Brogmus, George Erich and Meshkati, Najmedin (1992): Human Factors Influencing Machine-Related High "Cost" Accidents in Industrial Operations. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 36th Annual Meeting 1992. pp. 987-991.

Using the Liberty Mutual Insurance Group Data Base, 13 Industrial machine-related accidents reported during 1990 with incurred losses over $200,000 each were analyzed for contributing human factors elements. The results indicate that machine-related high cost accidents in industrial operations have a multitude of human factors-related influences, both on the macro and micro-ergonomic levels.

Brogmus, George Erich and Marko, Richard (1992): The Proportion of Cumulative Trauma Disorders of the Upper Extremities in U.S. Industry. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 36th Annual Meeting 1992. pp. 997-1001.

Numerous case studies indicate a high incidence of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) of the upper extremities. However, there have been few broad based attempts to give an assessment of the problem in industry overall. Using two large databases of accident information, CTDs were found to account for approximately 3% of all accidents and 3.5% of all accident costs in 1991. An increasing trend was clearly indicated over the past several years. Analysis was also done by state and job classification.

Brogmus, George Erich (1991): Effects of Age and Sex on Speed and Accuracy of Hand Movements: And the Refinements They Suggest for Fitts' Law. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 35th Annual Meeting 1991. pp. 208-212.

Based on modifications of Fitts' Law suggested in the literature, 121 unique formulas were tested against reciprocal tapping data from 1,318 subjects (1,047 males and 271 females) who participated in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging from 1960 to 1981 in order to determine the best formula (based on the standard error of estimate) and to examine age and sex differences using this formula. The best formula for males differed from that found for females, resulting in a set of new formulas which take into consideration age and sex and which fit the experimental data better than past formulations. While females were faster than males and young were faster than the old, a substantial portion of age and sex differences might be explained by a speed-accuracy tradeoff.
