Roussinov, Dmitri, Fong, SzeWang and Skillicorn, David (2007): Detecting word substitutions: PMI vs. HMM. In: Proceedings of the 30th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 2007. pp. 885-886. Available online

Those who want to conceal the content of their communications can do so by replacing words that might trigger attention. For example, instead of writing "The bomb is in position", a terrorist may chose to write "The flower is in position." The substituted sentence would sound a bit "odd" for a human reader and it has been shown in prior research that such oddity is detectable by text mining approaches. However, the importance of each component in the suggested oddity detection approach has not been thoroughly investigated. Also, the approach has not been compared with such an obvious candidate for the task as Hidden Markov Models (HMM). In this work, we explore further oddity detection algorithms reported earlier, specifically those based on pointwise mutual information (PMI) and Hidden Markov Models (HMM).

Roussinov, Dmitri and Robles, Jose (2004): Web question answering through automatically learned patterns. In: JCDL04: Proceedings of the 4th ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2004. pp. 347-348. Available online

While being successful in providing keyword based access to web pages, commercial search portals, such as Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, and AOL, still lack the ability to answer questions expressed in a natural language. We explore the feasibility of a completely trainable approach to the automated question answering on the Web or large scale digital libraries. By using the inherent redundancy of large scale collections, each candidate answer found by the system is triangulated (confirmed or disconfirmed) against other possible answers. Since our approach is entirely self-learning and does not involve any linguistic resources it can be easily implemented within digital libraries or Web search portals.

Roussinov, Dmitri and Robles, Jose (2004): Self-learning web question answering system. In: Proceedings of the 2004 International Conference on the World Wide Web 2004. pp. 400-401. Available online

While being quite successful in providing keyword based access to web pages, commercial search portals, such as Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, and AOL, still lack the ability to answer questions expressed in a natural language. In this paper, we present a probabilistic approach to automated question answering on the Web. Our approach is based on pattern matching and answer triangulation. By taking advantage of the redundancy inherent in the Web, each answer found by the system is triangulated (confirmed or disconfirmed) against other possible answers. Our approach is entirely self-learning: it does not involve any linguistic resources, nor it does require any manual tuning. Thus, the propose approach can easily be replicated in other information systems with large redundancy.

Automatically created maps of concepts improve navigation in a collection of text documents. We report our research on leveraging navigation by providing interactively the ability to modify the maps themselves. We believe that this functionality leads to better responsiveness to the user and a more effective search. For this purpose we have created and tested a prototype system that builds and refines in real-time a map of concepts found in Web documents returned by a commercial search engine.
