Grace, Julia H., Zhao, Dejin and boyd, danah (2010): Microblogging: what and how can we learn from it?. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2010 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2010. pp. 4517-4520.

Microblogging, the act of broadcasting short, real-time messages, is a relatively new communication practice allowing people to share information they are less likely to express using existing technologies (e.g. email, phone, IM or weblogs). We use microblogging as an umbrella term to include the posting of status updates to social network sites such as Facebook, and message-exchange services like Twitter, Jaiku, and Yammer. Microblogging has become popular quickly, catching researchers' interests as both a means of public, social information exchange, and a medium for collaboration and communication in the work context. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to exchange insights into microblogging as a communication practice in enterprises, academic and social settings. We aim to develop an agenda for what and how we can learn from and better study this phenomenon.

Zhao, Dejin and Rosson, Mary Beth (2009): How and why people Twitter: the role that micro-blogging plays in informal communication at work. In: GROUP09 - International Conference on Supporting Group Work 2009. pp. 243-252.

Micro-blogs, a relatively new phenomenon, provide a new communication channel for people to broadcast information that they likely would not share otherwise using existing channels (e.g., email, phone, IM, or weblogs). Micro-blogging has become popular quite quickly, raising its potential for serving as a new informal communication medium at work, providing a variety of impacts on collaborative work (e.g., enhancing information sharing, building common ground, and sustaining a feeling of connectedness among colleagues). This exploratory research project is aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of how and why people use Twitter -- a popular micro-blogging tool -- and exploring micro-blog's potential impacts on informal communication at work.

We report an exploratory study of the impacts of design planning on end users asked to develop a simple interactive web application. Some participants were asked to create a conceptual map to plan their projects and others to write scenarios; a third group was asked to do whatever they found useful. We describe the planning that each group underwent, how they approached the web development task, and their reactions to the experience afterwards. We also discuss how participants' gender and experience was related to their web development activities.
